Aussies don't care about the whole convict thing. The way we we treated the Aborigines is something to be ashamed though.

It's actually bloody nice down under, there's tons of land, and life's pretty good (if a bit expensive).

I hate the convict thing. To me it's an insult and I think much of the time that's how it's intended. Maybe if I was actually descended from convicts I might feel differently.

I'm sure you don't lose much sleep over it, though. It helped to launch a great nation, but in the grand scheme of things, it's only a small part of your history. I'd be more worried about beating the All Blacks in the World Cup, if I were you. Until then your history is not complete.

But she was infact telling the truth, Australia ( other than the native aboriginies) was in fact colonised largely by convicts.

Or is that not the case ? Have I been misinformed ?

Thanks mate,I was not aware she was telling the truth when she said we Aussies are beneath everyone.

By the way not all Aussies are descendants of convicts so you are misinformed.

For all the Aussies on line, just remember Michael Jackson here thinks Aussies are low class.

Classy post mate.

Geez, Kang, chill out. We Americans joke about it all the time. We like the Aussies, certainly, but everybody knows about the convict angle. Nothing "beneath everyone" about that aspect of your history. Heck, there's a long list of stuff about America that we're ashamed of. But it doesn't mean I'm ashamed to be an American. If you're that thin-skinned, perhaps try being a hermit.

Wot ' e said (and I'm English w00t.gif )

An Englishman,great.

While ive got you here just a quick question, why did the poms send the convicts to paradise and stay themselves in a cold grey drab s hole, lol.

Always wondered that, just messing with ya.

The fact the OP is whining on here about this is highly amusing.

When my Mrs Toad was in the UK 8 years ago we went to Wales for a few days to visit some of my old work colleagues. On the drive up,i had mentioned a few times, about how the Welsh had a love of sheep. We were sat later in the pub in the valleys, when she asked innocently, why do The Welsh love sheep? It was pretty hilarious really, and the people we were with certainly saw the funny side. I don't think they posted on Taff Visa the next day.

As another said, she's probably been prepped b a Pom or a Kiwi.

How can someone who looks up to Michael Jackson, call anyone or anything, low class.

It could be worse, he could have called himself Gary Glitter.

Dunno mate. My folks moved out to Melbourne as £10 Poms when I was 10. They moved backed to Blighty when I was 14. I've never forgiven them sad.png

Well, considering the large number of convicts in relation to the total number of immigrants, chances are high that Aussies are descendants from murderers, con men, robbers and rapists. Higher than any other nationality. So whether you like it or not or even fail to recognise that fact, she probably DID school you...

Yes my friends bar girl missus sure did school me.

Hence the reason I have an accountant and he a bar girl,I was not wise enough or classy enough to get a girl on her level,we Aussies just cannot keep up.

An accountant? Well I guess that puts things in completely new perspective.

But she did school you.

Op: Is your issue with.....

A ) That a girl whom you consider is below you (bargirl) considers you (Aussie) below her ?

B ) That she may have had an ex who's taught her such despicable bigotry ?

C ) The truth hurts ?

D ) That other members of this forum have joined in on the windup ?

Good question, been called a convict in Canada and the USA,all in fun.

The difference is when someone sits down to a friendly dinner, and begins the conversation with a deliberate insult.

No humour involved, just bad intentions,it was not the convict remark that bothered me,it was the fact that anything negative was said at all for no reason.

We never judged her,you must admit to begin a dinner like that was strange.

Your quite right, despite really not caring about our history, and just being rude as she was not intending to be funny and she had arrived angry and surly from the get go.

She was well within her rights to not only mention the convict thing, but be angry and moody to strangers from the get go who we're treating her with respect.

How could I have got it so wrong, big difference between her rudeness and your wife's lack of understanding, this woman was on the attack.

For the record,it's not a tear jerker but he'll what else shall we talk about.

But well the Americans are always the first who got angry when the Europeans are joking about their lack of old culture. (That gives excellent troll postings, with a few comments about it you can complete de-rail a discussion and change it into a mindless bashing laugh.png. So some Americans seems also very thin-skinned.

But all together it is total childish, speaking about a 200-400 years ago. Who makes jokes about the French and Napoleon...no one and that is much younger.

I thought the Pomms were the convicts ???

So why are the English still referred to as Pomms !!

It`s all here listed in the Koala.net layman`s guide to Australian slang, which is probably where the friend`s Thai girl friend found all her information:

http://www.koalanet.com.au/australian-slang.html

I have taken a keen interest in this and by the end of the week, I may be able to speak fluent Ozzie and even qualify for an Australian passport.

tell someone that cares, I have traced my family back to 7 different convicts, one was the first freed convict to own land on Norfolk Island and is in the history books(he stole a sheep to feed his family according to the transcripts). On the otherside I have french(aristocracy) and german descendants and can trace some family back to the 1500's. My family has fought for Australia in both world wars and I am proud of what they accomplished. Australia is tiny in comparison to many countries yet we won the Americas cup(first country to do it in the US), have many world class sportpeople, win more olympic medals than Thailand constantly(have ranked in the top 10, even top 5), win major tennis, golf and cricket tournaments, have invented many top inventions and our soldiers are ranked as one of the worlds best. We might have had ambiguous beginnings but we have more then proved ourselves over the years, like every other country we have out good and bad points but anyone trying to denigrate the country are usually pissed off that we do so well(better then them), especially when you consider Bangkok has a bigger population than all of Australia.thumbsup.gif

Either you`re about 500 years old or you mean, ancestors?

Most Australians wouldn't give a Castlemaine XXXX what anybody says about them.

The sort of bloke that does not sit there and eat like a deaf mute when some slapper insults him.

Probably wasn't aimed at you personally...

She was just stating where Aussies rank on the bar girl score card.

You should ask your g/f where they rank on the accountants score card ???

Then just settle for an average :)

It's quite amusing to hear that as most Aussies who can trace their lineage back to the convict setlers are proud of it. It's a badge of honour. Some are even proud of being 10 pound Poms. But none are proud to be called the West Island, which I thought would be the greatest honour of all.

You are playing to a limited audience ... but noted ... dry.png

We would retort with ...

Last one out (having left for the 'West Island') please turn off the light ... biggrin.png

It surprises me she knew some facts about western history. Bet she didn't know that the Pome's found gold in Oz.

I 've been all over Oz for a year together with some UK-friends that i met there. They called us Beavis and Butthead going around the world and we called them Pome's, just for laughs.

Ozzy's are very friendly people and have a great country. I loved to be there.

That girl must have been in a bad mood and i wonder how she knew that piece of Ozzy history. Normally they don't know anything about foreign history and many even think Australia is the same as Austria.
