SantiSuk
NOTE THE EARLIER START (to minimise winter darkness) The fishing and river-restaurant village of Had Khu Dua has emerged from its annual submerged state and is again a great place for a hash. Just outside Ubon Ring Road yet like an island trapped deep in the countryside, encircled by a long meander in the River Mun. See next posting for an idea of the lovely scenery you will see on the hash. Directions: Meet at N-Joy bar at 3:45pm prompt on Saturday 7th December if you want a lift to the 'run' site (or a preprandial beer). Alternatively, go directly to the start point for a 4:00pm start. To get to the start, travel north-bound from the SiSaket intersection of Ubon Ring Road West; immediately after crossing the Mun River (like 20 meters after!) turn left - signposted to Had Khu Dua. Zero your trip meter and after 2.6 kilometres, after passing scores of river restaurants, you will see a delapidated TOT phone box on the left by the river. Park up! You will have passed a TOT phone box at 1.5 kiloms (right hand side) and 2.0 kiloms (left hand side) by the way.Everyone welcome, runners, walkers (we mostly have that variety - you don't have to be fit!). The idea is to follow a trail of chalk dust or something similar - walkers typically do 4 kilometres or less - with pleasant company, then have a few beers and generally socialise. First timers ("virgins") are especially welcome and it the cost for you is an absolute bargain. More details below Fresh supplies of our popular "I love Ubon" (in Isaan language of course) Ubon Hash shirts will be available for purchase at near cost - 160B (for kids); 180B for average-sized (Thai) ladies, ranging thru' to 240B for doubleXL fat ba$tard males . I definitely have your size if you see me soon. On ONSteve aka "Flash Git"N-Joy is at the far western end of Palochai Road beyond the City Tohsang Hotel and beyond Ubon prison. You will have to access it along Palochai Road from the city centre. Drain repairs have effectively blocked off access form the western end of Palochai. Hashing is social 'running' and there have been hash clubs all over the world since its 1930s origins in Kuala Lumpur. The running bit is not taken seriously and beer is drunk to oil the social side. Ubon Hash, in line with the Ubon environment is laid back and only a few enthusiasts put in a few spurts of running. The rest walk. A trail is laid, typically in white flour/chalk and the pack must find the trail, which keeps the front runners busy while the walkers catch up. After the run the beer ice-boxes are opened and the socialising begins. We usually go back for some more beer and maybe some food around town in the early evening, and some more beer later in the evening, but that is entirely optional on your part! Although hashing has been described as a 'beer drinking club with a running problem' you will find that we are not drunken lunatics and quite sociable really!Don't be a stay at home wuss - get out there with us and discover the sides of Ubon you would not normally uncover. It's dead cheap (100B) for your first outing and inexpensive (200B) thereafter; even cheaper for Thais - and that includes several free beers afterwards, and often a beer stop during the run. SantiSuk
You will get a better idea of location by opening this file Hat Khu Dua satellite image.doc Note the high water mark on the balcony top left. The level of the river Mun has dropped 7 metres in 3 weeks! Typical Ubon river-fishing village streetscape Water levels still a bit high. The beach has not yet re-emerged in the river .... ....and the monks at Wat Khu Dua still have a wet walk to work! There'll be some off-road too. Crying out for a 'check-mark' Edited November 29, 2013 by SantiSuk
