America has the world's 3rd largest population - perhaps 4 - 5 times as large as the UK, but I seem to find more Brits in Los than Americans. Maybe that's a wrong impression I have? America has 15 times the population of Australia, but I seem to meet more Aussies than Americans in LOS. For Aussies, LOS is close and cheap.

Quite a lot of Americans claim to be Canadian when abroad.

I may be an experiment of one, but as an American I have never, ever considered identifying myself as anything but what I am, and have never seen it done by any other American as well.

Perhaps your statement is one of opinion rather than fact?

I'm an American and frequently identify myself as Canadian. Because you haven't been around don't mean the other guy is wrong. If one travels in places where Americans are killed it's a good idea. I was in Asia in the 1970's and a lot of places did not like Americans. Today if you frequent British Pubs in Thailand it is not a bad idea to practice your Canadian eh? Does the phrase drunk football hooligan ring a bell? Do you go into a British pub and announce you're an Irish Catholic? Did hippies drive through Georgia and tell people they were from NYC and there to protest in the 1960's. When I stopped to get gas in Stone Mountain GA. I'd say I'm from Canada which way is Florida?

Of all the safe Countries, this article has not scratched the surface of safe Countries of Europe, many of them have a warm climate, and are cheaper to live in than Thailand. And are beauitiful countries in their own right.

Do your research, you may be pleasantly surprised. The Mediteranean countries can be amazing too!

Serious question here: Just which "safe Countries of Europe, many of them have a warm climate, and are cheaper to live in than Thailand. And are beauitiful countries in their own right" are you referring to.

And on a different subject entirely, to the person who earlier said something to the effect that many Americans say they're actually Canadian, or whatever. Hahahahahah! Those are actually Canadians acting like they're Americans saying they're Canadians. Please, get your facts straight!

what does''acting like an american mean''.....do you really think i want to present myself as an american...mabey you are the reason americans are disliked so much...dude...

I am just curious on how you reached the conclusion that I have not "been around."

Because Americans in Asia during the late 60's and early 70's frequently said they were Canadian and in Canada and Southern parts of the US and in British pubs in Thailand during the last 20 years. Although how you would know they were not Canadian is anyone's guess.

Many American draft dodgers and deserters went to Canada during the Vietnam war and since the Canadians did not react favorably to so many Yanks invading Canada many of them learned how to eat the Canadian way and say, "eh" after every sentence, throw octopuses on skating rinks and drink strong beer.

I would never pretend to be Canadian unless I were in a situation like Mumbai and the terrorists were checking people's passports to decide who to kill. I would cook up a nationality quick (I have a few passable ones to choose from) and say I had lost my passport. Barring that, I welcome all comers to have a go at me if they hate Americans that much.

Yeah, yeah, talk's cheap on the internet, keyboard warrior. Got three words for ya: rural North Vietnam, where many live who had close relatives killed by 'Mercans. No, they ain't all humble, peaceful farmers up there. Meet some outright thugs and thuggish gov't cadres.

Discretion's the best part of valor sometimes. Learned that from a long-time 'Mercan resident of Vietnam.

Alright - now we're talking! Let's move on to comparing penis sizes next.

What does that have to do with retirement destination? New kind of debate tactic? The guy told you the truth and you mock? Why?

A number of folks have told you there are places where it is wise to tell people you are a Canadian. Get over it, learn something and move on. No reason to flame no one is being nasty.

You are right. Please accept my apologies.

I am from USA.( The term "American' includes Mexico, Canada, and all of central and south America as well! )

.

Most from the USA don't come to LOS because it is so damn far to travel,.(20 + hours not counting lay overs for me!)

Australia is very close in comparison, England, Germany, Russia ,India are much closer as well.

Being so far from old friends and relitives is a major factor for many when considering retirement I think.

I think most, but not all retired folks in LOS will fit into one of two catagories.

1) Those married to or living with a Thai or,

2)Single guys who love the casual life here and maybe the availability of beautiful Thai women..

I have met very few (2) retired farang/farang couples here.

Most farang women do not love Thailand like the men do.

Hey wait, being American I definitely want to compare p_e_n_i_s sizes, esp with the Americans who say they're Canadian. Hahahahah! Mine's 8 centimeters! That should get everyone back on topic...

Americans, or American people, are citizens, permanent lawful residents or natives of the United States.

I am from Canada and I'm a Canadian - don't ever call me an American :) I only use the term North American in reference to geography only, never its inhabitants.

There's one I would have to see the reference. How do you come up with that bit?
It's a thing. Trust me.

Reading comprehension skills at all? It's all there in my post...yeah, if I thought people were going to try to kill me on that basis, I would lie. Sure. It's in my post. At a bar full of people from the UK? No. I tend to get along with them just fine and I can take the jabs (verbal or otherwise, i guess...never come to that due to me being American after many, many countries, including the UK itself--everyone there was fine). They are free to their opinion and to tell it to me however they want and I am not going to make lying my way of conducting myself because people have problems with the US.

Not saying I am aggressive about it either, but I am not going to cower down at every nook and cranny because someone doesn't like Americans....seriously, you couldn't go anywhere if you did that.
