mate saw it ...guy just walked or rather skipped in front of the bus ...the bus had no chance of stopping ...saw similar opposite mikes dept store ...guy just walked straight out into traffic ...baht bus slammed on brakes and stopped but got rear ended ... the guy just gave them a quizzical look and trotted off .....i bet thats the last time that baht bus driver stops for farang ....

The report said he was hit by the side of the coach.............but the pictures seem to fit your account better.

It is a sharp corner so you can imagine a coach hitting someone like that.

Poor guy, 2 broken legs is very difficult.

Silly tourists and some new residents...they think pedestrians have the right if way in Thailand... I'm constantly having to honk my horn at them to remind them otherwise.

They should rename that turn as the "Chicken Run".

Probably the Irish Man thought the Bus driver would stop and the bus drive thought the Irish man would steep back on to the side walk, the Irish man lost.

One thing for sure the bus could not have been going fast, it is such a tight corner the driver would have to be looking everywhere to negotiate it, including watching above for low hanging power lines.

Wonder what that bus was doing there? I am sure the are no hotels that a bus of that size could possibly be calling at anywhere south of Central on Beach Road, probably just sight seeing the "Coca Nut Bar", may be it is time to ban large lorries and coaches from that section of Beach Road at night.

That corner is a disaster.... being Friday night there was a LOT of foot traffic trying to get in and out of Walking St... the Beach Side is a mess with construction work still ongoing and no access, so where are all these people going to go? Of course the other side is just a narrow pavement mostly blocked by plastic-crap vendors. The corner is also narrowed by parking baht buses on Tai and dropping off ones stopping on Beach Rd. Then you have these coaches the size of battleships trying to make the bend.

It is really pathetic that this situation is permitted.... a poor way to treat the tourists.

I found it infuriating even with the absence of traffic!

"That corner is a disaster"

I have a new design for the corner - but still 'waiting to hear' from 'the powers' re our Pattaya Bypass proposal (http://www.pattayaprogress.org/roads), (3 - 4 years, 3 - 4 presentations) so I can't be bothered to even put corner design on paper.

I would need an NDA before disclosure, & that won't happen.

Take care -

Your link didn't work for me......

I also do not know what NDA is....

Pattaya is in need of some serious investment in roads..... it has been done, the extension to Rt 7 and the railway line bypass, Jomtiem.

second Rd for example. But everyone is busy building condos!

Coach driver sees the funny side of it, yes.

He's probably still off his nut, and the Yabbaa hasent worn off yet.

From what gaucho said it was the Irishman who was under the influence.

Is that the usual sterotypical comment about the Irish?

Groucho stated; mate saw it ...guy just walked or rather skipped in front of the bus.

Do I see stagger here?? Or did you?

Irishmen only skip after they've had a drink or two................rolleyes.gif

At least that's what it took for me to skip.................wink.png

Try this link http://www.pattayaprogress.org/roads/

An NDA is a Non Disclosure Agreement - allows discussion of the design without disclosure to third parties.

So many condos being built - & we are getting gridlock now. What will it be like when they are occupied? Road capacity is very non linear - as you reach capacity, then it drops to near zero as cars pile up. '97 cash crunch saw traffic in US down 3% - but traffic jams down 30%.

Clogged pavements also encourage pedestrians to feel it is perfectly ok to walk in the road. Clogged pavements are a problem found in every part of Thailand.

Who is blocking the pavements? Number one is businesses and vendors either simply setting up shop on the pavement with carts and stalls or extending their shopfront out into the pavement. Motorcycle taxis and Songthaews either park on the pavement or set up station blocking the pavement with their vehicles or cast-off sofas. Signs are placed blocking the pavement. There is no order or rules which is true for many things here. Walking around any Thai town or city is not pleasurable, it is overcoming an obstacle course.

Complete disregard for the rules of the road.

By those who don't know what the rules really are. They wrongly assume the rules are the same as in developed countries. Not so. We're following Thai rules here.

Basic rules include

all vehicles are more important than all pedestrians and always have right of way

pedestrians are merely an annoyance to drivers; a driver can't be expected to stop for any pedestrian at any time; at most, the driver may try to dodge--in one direction or another

obey the vehicle pecking order: the larger or more expensive vehicle has right of way

exception to the above: vehicle in a much greater hurry, as shown by speeding, lights flashing, and reckless driving (relatively)

driving on the wrong side of the road or the sidewalk is sometimes necessary

etc.

Our countless experts can add a lot of rules here, but knowing and following these would be most helpful. I speak as a long time PTY resident who's never been hit by any vehicles . . . despite all.

Thanks for that....big investment though.

I didn't notice anything about what to do at The Beach Rd/ South Rd Corner though, other than the fact that they ignored your idea that a widening of Beach Rd was not a good idea. I recall the subject being brought up with a well know face in town, that the widening was a waste of time and money, as the biggest problem would remain unchanged, you just get there easier. He denied the fact based on 'a lot of traffic turns left prior to South Rd'. Absolutely not the case as far as I can see.......

I would accept 'large' investment, but then you get a lot for your money. A large part of the route exists already, in a low rise / open area - just needs to be widened to 2 lanes each way & provision for future 3rd lanes. Then connect N/NE 2.2 km to 7, S/SW 3 km to Sukhumvit at Floating Market. Overpasses on Bypass, roundabouts under for E / W crosses.

Capacity (with no lights from Huay Hai to 7) would be double that of Sukhumvit.

Current allowance for Sukhumvit tunnels is 27 months construction per tunnel & 4 tunnels, - 10 years? & total 100 mill US $ (IIRC)

The bypass can be built with almost minimal disruption to Sukhumvit, then having 5 minutes from Sukhumvit nr Floating Market to 7 Nr Chaitapornvittee will vacuum off a lot of Suk. traffic. Effectively we move Sattahip 10 minutes closer to Bangkok. Or vice versa.

This would also help 'open up' the dark side, as travelling N / S in this area at the moment is mostly on goat tracks.

It's what makes driving a carSUV such a joy...pesky pedestrians mostly know their place. The ones that don't are quickly culled out of the population herd.

From pedestrian point of view, yes, SUV scare me.

But I must bring you bad news. Nothing scares me more than a baht bus on fast lane on Beach Rd, going at 100 km/hr at 3 am.

SUV are not even on 2nd place. Small nasty tuned up Vios, with neon lights tuning going at 120 km/hr take 2nd place. SUV is 3rd place winner.

From point of view of other drivers, SUV wins of course.

Why did the Irishman cross the road ?

Now that is a good question, could be many reasons for crossing a road, maybe he was on the way to walking street, or maybe the sidewalk on the other side was less crowded, does it really matters?
