Problem with Non 'O' at Hull

Featured Replies

I've just phoned the consulate in Hull to check on the turn around times as I want my passport returned to a work address which will close on the 20th. That seems OK but whilst I was on the phone I thought I'd check to make sure I had all the right documents. I'm marries to a Thai national so I've got copies of the marriage cert and her passport and ID. I've got the completed form, my passport and a cheque. I got a bit confused after that because they said I needed 3 months of bank statements showing an income of I think £1200 a month or £16,000 in a lump sum. At the moment I've got just over £13,000 in an account in the UK and probably about £9,000 in baht in a Thai bank to satisfy my requirements there. I have other money coming in soon but that's not much help.

I'm 59 but I don't have a pension.

I did mention that isn't on their website and I was told that if they put things on their website the embassy keep changing it.

I'm thinking of a triple entry tourist visa which if I'm right will give me 60 days when I arrive. I assume that I should get 60 days on my subsequent entries. I'm flying back to the UK on the 17th June for a wedding when I could possibly get a new Non Imm 'O'. In February my sister and bil are coming out to visit and we're going to visit Lao, returning on the 15th Feb which will be my 2nd entry. That should take me to mid April and my 3rd should go to early June. I'm assuming that the days you enter and leave are included.

Could I just leave the kingdom (Nong Khai is fairly easy for me) and get a 30 day stamp which would cover the the time until I leave?

Many thanks for any help.

Yes.

As a UK citizen you will now get a 30 day stamp at land borders.

Contact the consulate in Birmingham for your visa. They are not using the same rules as hull.

I was going to try Birmingham but they're only open until 11:30. I assume they're closed tomorrow as well. I can't really take a chance that they will be different. I know all multi entry Non 'O' visas have to be approved by the embassy and it maybe there that this is coming from in which case Birmingham may well be the same.

My only problem with the tourist option I mentioned is that there is a possibility of some work which that would prevent. My only other option as far as I can see is either a single entry tourist visa or just the 30 day stamp and then go to Lao or possibly Cambodia to get a Non 'O'

Latest reports for Birmingham was no financial proof was needed. You could get a single entry that does not need to be sent to the embassy. Then get a multiple entry from Savannakhet later.

You should call them. They may be open because they are not an official consulate.

Work is not permitted on a Non-Imm 'O'

(apologies if you meant work back in the UK)

Not if you are married to a Thai.

You can get a work permit and even use the income for your extensions of stay if you have income of 40k baht or more.

Ok I thought I'd try Birmingham again as you suggested. I noticed that the last time I phoned the emergency number by mistake. I got a reply this time very quickly despite their website saying they're not open. They've never heard of any financial requirements for a Non Imm 'O' based on marriage to a Thai national. So far so good but they need the marriage certificate in English as well as Thai which I don't have. That's been the case since July apparently. I suppose Hull might need that as well. It looks like it will have to be a tourist visa.

Is there anyway your wife could get the translation done and email it to you.

I'm going to try to get a translation done by an online company. I'm going to get the certificate with the flowers round the edge done although my wife says there's another part as well which I have got but only in Thai. I'd do that as well but it's double sided and I'm sure the main certificate is OK. I don't think it's going to be cheap but then neither is the alternative. I've spoken to Hull again and they're adamant that proof of finances is needed although this time it seemed that funds in Thailand is OK.

There is just a stamp on back of it that gives registry info. The consulate will not want a copy it.
