Citizenship or residency

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My wife's sister told me that if you remain in Thailand longer than 20 years you will be able to get permanent stay, I am wondering if anybody else knows anything about this.

regards

No, there is no such thing as automatic permanent residency ONLY based on total years living Thailand. Not 5, not 10, not 20, not 100 ...

There is no such thing.

Who told your wife's sister?

Off topic post and a reply to it removed.

It's just an old wive's sister's tale.

It's easy to imagine how such a myth gets started. The few f-rangs who do get Thai citizenship tend to be the more very long term stayers, but there is indeed of course no direct connection.

I rather imagine this is a "Chinese Whispers" thing that started out as somebody relating to a Thai friend that very long-term overstayers in most European countries are allowed to stay permanently under various amnesty conventions.

It is totally untrue what the OP's wife's sister claims any way.
