A University student wins 'Smart Lady' competition

BANGKOK, 16 Dec 2013, (NNT) - Miss Patsalin Reeprom, a 4th year Law student from Thammasat University won the Thai Women Empowerment Fund's Smart Lady Thailand Competition.

Twelve candidates had been selected to enter the 'Smart Camp' and had stayed in the house for a month, during which their behaviors were monitored. Each participant was given responsibility that would determine their characteristics. After the completion of the tenure in the camp, Miss Patsalin received the most votes in the household and coaching activities. She is awarded a 200,000 baht cash prize and an honorary plaque.

The 11 other contenders were each given a cash prize of 100,000 baht. In addition, the Thai Women Empowerment Fund also gave 1 million baht to fund the 12 women development projects proposed by all of the participants during their time in the camp.

Miss Thanida Tangkirati, meanwhile, received the Popular Vote Award which was decided by the number of ballots cast from the audience at home.

The organizer indicated the success of the scheme would empower and encourage women to assume the leading roles in the society, as they are powerful forces that drive the nation forward.

"The organizer indicated the success of the scheme would empower and encourage women to assume the leading roles in the society, as they are powerful forces that drive the nation forward."

Sort of a back handed compliment. Why does there need to be a competition to determine the "Smart Lady"? There doesn't appear to be the same process for determining the smart man. This is just another example of how Thai society treats women as second class citizens. Most foreigners I know hold the value of Thai women over that of Thai men. They appear to be running most of the local business and are motivated to improve their lives. The only thing that might contribute to their being envisioned as less intelligent is how they choose useless men who abandon them as soon as they become pregnant and are forced to provide all types of support for the new families by themselves (or with help from their extended families, who seem to be composed of other women).

The branding genius of this stupid event should be hung by the ears. 'Smart Lady Thailand'? It's such a 'snake snake fish fish' title. Laughable to the bone. Why not 'Modern Woman Thailand'? Such a mockery of the English language. Just stick to Thai please and don't try to impress the English speaking world.

It may well prove to be a poison chalice, as it will link her forever to the puppet of the fugitive criminal who almost brought Thailand to its knees...!
