Korn to temporarily retire from Democrat executive post

BANGKOK, 17 December 2013 (NNT) - Former Democrat Party leader Korn Chatikavanij has announced that he will be taking a break from his party’s administrative affairs, citing that political reform is yet to be achieved.

Mr Korn made the statement via his Facebook page, saying that he will not accept an executive post when the Democrat Party's general assembly is convened on Tuesday. The assembly is scheduled to be held to select a new executive committee and alter the party's regulations.

He said the decision came after his resignation from the deputy party leader post in October when the party was spearheading the movement against the blanket amnesty bill proposed by the government. The statement further said that he wishes to take a break from the party until more political reforms are realized ahead of the general election.

As for his relationship with fellow Democrat members, Mr Korn admitted that there has been some disagreement over the approaches taken against the government. However, the former party leader insisted that the issue is trivial and that he and the Democrats still share the same goal.

Oh no, Korn was the one with more gumption than Abhisit and more integrity than Suthep (OK OK not too difficult).

He is not tainted with ordering the slaughter of demonstators a few years ago.

I was counting on him to lead the Democrats to have any hope.

All he did was to disagree when Suthep broke into the Finance Ministry offices, and got vilified by the said Suthep. Korn is no coward, but he abhors the Suthep faction in the Democrats ranks.

Korn turns his back on Thailand's future until the dust is clear more.

Maybe his way to protests for more reforms in his party. Who knows there are a lot of bad / corrupt democrats too. Maybe he wants some expelled to give the party a better chance right now as change and anti corruption is what the Thai people want.

The corrupt politicians on both sides will fight this but for now only the corrupt reds matter as they hold the power. There won't be any change if its up to them. The reds have shown that they want to remove checks and balances not add new ones.

He is probably embarrassed by the way his "colleagues" are behaving. Educated to a high standard overseas, like Abhisit, he is probably tired of the games and wants a break.

yeah the democrat still share the same goal alright, lets get into power in an undemocratic way!

What a bullshit comment Mr. Red Shirt government stooge...

It is a political move. I thought he might and happy to see he did.

The Democratic Party, due to their alleged involvement with the protestors (Suthep didn't resign until after the demonstrations began), may be dissolved. If so, their executive committee is banned for 5 years. By resigning from the executive committee now, Korn escapes the ban. He then sets up a New Democratic a party.

It appears pre-planned and is smart.

The democrats are a hilariously misnamed disaster zone and so is the phea thai party, just when the PT exposes how awful they really are, the democrats find a way of being worse than them. Korn has done the right thing of parachuting out of the upcoming clusterf***.

This is a man of honour and integrity who is not prepared to sell his support for position, he is a true gentleman of politics. Thailand would do well to have party of like minded individuals administering the country. There is no one in the Thaksin organisation that could hold a candle to him.

Hopefully he is the vanguard of many honourable Dems to follow suite to force revolutionary change within the party or to build a more credible organisation from the ashes.

Korn is decidedly not very Thai at all despite their constant claims and pretending to the contrary. He's a farang in mind and values.

You could be right, i hope so. Thailand needs a half decent opposition at the very least.

From my POV all the democrats have done now is grab the gun that the PT used to shoot itself jn the foot and then used it to shoot themselves in the foot - repeatedly.

If they had just sat back once the amnesty had been withdrawn it would have been much better; the PT are so dysfunctional they would have probably continued making a mess of things.

Perhaps the honourable MP (still?) Khanchit Thabsuwan who shot and killed a PTP official in front of eyewitnesses could join them, unless of course the police have brought him to court yet (some hope). The honourable abhisit backed up Thabsuwans right to immunity whilst remaining an MP and refused to hand him over to police.

"I do not believe that anybody who shoots someone in public, in front of many witnesses, can escape justice despite the lack of evidence on the murder weapon and the escape vehicle. The [other] evidence police have now is more than available," the officer said. http://http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/Khanchit-fails-to-show-gun-30173303.html
The mere fact that the accused refuses to hand over the murder weapon and escape vehicle seems to have gone over the head of the officer involved. Strangely nothing more has been heard.

I have no idea why someone like Korn, who is obviously an extremely intelligent and articulate man would want to be involved in politics.

He could hold any number of high powered private sector roles with a 100th of the hassle, as he did previously.

I am sure those on here who have had dealings with him when he was at JP and previously will know what he is like to do business with.....

Are you suggesting that maybe he is brighter than your average Thai because of his British birth and education? He certainly has very good Thai pedigree behind him.

+1 most of the TVP seem to forget that the Democrats have some very very nasty people in their party. They keep bashing the current government but can't see that the parties are very much the same.

BTW: As all MP's have resigned already, Khanchit could easily be arrested as he has no more immunity. The SWAT team should do it.

I'm not sure whether he would be familiar with the concept of "noblesse oblige", but that admirable trait is what he is displaying.
