Third Anniversary Run

Stiffy and Mam Wedding

Location: Naung Luang in Tha Sai, 2 kilometers south of the windmill off highway 1020 near the east bank of the Mae Laow River

The Chiangrai S2ATO hash postponed its third anniversary run one week in order to coordinate with the Stiffy and Mam wedding on that same day. As a result attendance exceeded 50 thanks to Stiffy who mobilized friends in Japan, Bangkok and Chiangmai to spend the weekend in Chiangrai. Eleven came from the local kennel.

The run was an A to B beginning at an abandoned resort and ending at a beautiful pavilion surrounded by a lake. The trail had previously been used for a special charity run on October 31, 2006 for hashers going on a post lube tour of Laos. You can read about that experience on our website at www.kenoji.com/hash. Fortunately none of the local hashers appeared at the charity event and so we used the same site a second time.

The trail never touched tarmac. For the most part it followed shaded footpaths through forests and along freshly-harvested rice fields. There were multiple options leading off from most checks. False trails jumbled up the leadership and kept the walkers and runners tightly packed. The female runners from Japan proved to be a sturdier group than the local breed. Half way through the run, the FRBs began working as a team and they began to pull away from the walkers. Whereas the post lube runners took 1 hour 15 minutes to complete the course, the 3d anniversary group finished up in 45 minutes. First and third in were our own Nam Raun and Paddy Boy but only because a German guy insisted on following the purple paper laid for the post lube. This took him on a detour around the lake which was almost a kilometer long. Walkers arrived a half hour later. Young Keith and spouse, new members of our S2ATO set a new record for the slowest hashers. They appeared an hour and half after the walkers, too late for either beer or snacks. He turned up at the start a few minutes after the sweep had left and found his own way around the course.

The run had begun at noon, in order to dove tail into the wedding scheduled for 5 pm. Anticipating hungry runners, the hares laid on plentiful snacks at the end. There were also traditional lanna jackets (mau haum) for all to take home as souvenirs. Down downs mainly held victims responsible for whatever may have befallen them. Bimboo was targeted repeatedly. He is the guy who introduced Stiffy to Mam whose wedding occasioned this weekend. Also honoured were the newly elected Mismanagement Committee including:

The wedding weekend began at 7 pm on Friday night where 27 hashers gathered at the Dusit Island hotel for a run through the town. The trail, laid by Ajarn Ki Mau, led up a dark staircase to a temple high above the town where the gang was serenaded by howling dogs. Thereafter they lost sight of paper but nonetheless found their way through the market to two bars before winding up at the Chai Nam restaurant on the south bank of the Kok River. Although many fell by the wayside, somehow the total number kept growing so that by the time they reached the end point there were no less than 40. The groom and his partners were then roundly denounced in a series of down downs in the parking lot before retreating to a magnificent buffet at the river’s edge.

The wedding itself began early the next morning at the Dusit Island with a Buddhist ceremony. This concluded just in time for the hashers to head out to the anniversary run. The second half resumed with a Christian ceremony in the Dusit’s garden followed by a reception around the swimming pool. Speeches were conveniently short and few. The ladies dressed in their finery but most men hid their attire under the mau haum so recently acquired.

Sunday afternoon began with an A to B run ending at Paddy Boy’s farm behind the university. The groom began as a live hare but somehow transformed into a sweep! Go figure. Over 200 people appeared including local villagers. There was an excellent live band and the party went far into the night. Thanks to Stiffy’s generosity there was no shortage of food and drink. Although transportation was available, eight people missed their onward flights that night. The party went on into the early hours of the morning. Many folks commented that the weekend provided the intimacy which was so totally missing at the recent Interhash.

Next Hash

Hi all

Our next HHH run will be on Saturday Dec. 16 starting at the home of

Well Oiled and Oiled Well. This will be an A to B. We will travel to A and

back to the house from B by an Edan (locally made farm truck) so please all

come to Oiled's by 3:30 pm because we will need time to go out to the

starting point.

To get to the Oiled's drive north along the Asian Highway (towards Mae

Sai) and turn left at the first traffic lights after the bridge. Travel

along that road about 3 km until you reach a t-junction (HHH sign) and then

turn right towards Huai Mae Sai waterfalls. Travel about 7 km until you

reach another t-junction (HHH sign) where you turn right again. Less than

100 meters along that road you will come to a cement paved road called Soi 5

(HHH sign) with a sign saying "Baan Du." Enter that soi and go along about 1

km. The cement paving ends at the entry way to a temple at the top of the

hill. Turn left up the hill (HHH sign) and enter the first (and only)

driveway on your right. It will take about 35 minutes to drive there from

the Big C.

Next Hash is on Saturday 17th 4.00 pm

How to get there:

Beginning at the Little Duck Hotel go north along the Asian Highway and

then turn left at the first road you come to after passing over the Kok

River. Continue along this road until you reach a T-junction and then turn

right (HHH sign).

You are now heading north along the road towards the Huai Mae Sai

waterfall. After about 5 km you will come to another T-junction. Here you

turn right (HHH sign) and continue to follow the main road to the Huai Mae

Sai waterfalls until you reach kilometer stone 12. Turn into the dirt road

on your right (HHH sign) and go about a kilometer towards Ban Suksacen. Park

where the road reaches a Y junction where the right branch leads up a hill

and the left branch becomes a very rough road.

Plan on 40 minutes drive from the Little Duck Hotel to this site

assuming no traffic jam.

Report of Run #40: Saturday, February 17, 2007

Location: Baan Suksaserm, Mae Yaow off the road to Huai Mae Sai Waterfalls

Twenty-five people showed up for our February run. Demographically it was very different from the usual crowd. This time we had ten women for fifteen men. The women were equally divided between locals and expatriates. There was only one child however. This was Heineken’s Piss’s son, Belgian Waffle who despite his Hash name, ably represented the Thai male gender.

Veteran hashers will remember the Baan Suksa Serm area as the site of the overnight hash #20 on June 20, 2005. On that occasion hashers found the trail too short. The FRB’s ran the trail two times to get sufficient exercise then did a third time in search of a late hasher, Jaylon, who had phoned to say she was lost. They found her back on the trail doing head stands. Thus she acquired the name “Head First.”

This time the hare, Helping Hand determined that she would respond amply to the deficiencies of Hand Cock’s efforts the month before. Whereas some complained about simplicity, this time it would be complex. Others said the trail was too short, she would not make the same mistake. Still others thought it was too flat, so she chose an area which was anything but flat.

In the course of eight visits to the area, Helping Hand thought she had found the perfect route. She then made it more complex by her creative way of laying the trail. Without a word to anyone, she decided that all trail intersections would automatically be checks. Moreover her frugal Canadian nature inclined her to minimize the use of paper. This added a touch of suspense to the day as much of the time no one knew if we were on trail or not. However she did draw powder lines across false trails but in the absence of paper leading up to them, one could be forgiven for thinking that the real trail led somewhere beyond the false trail. Thus Stung ran through two false trail marks and stumbled upon the real trail. This put her far ahead of the usual two FRB’s, GM Nam Raun and Barefoot Bob. However she and the others then ran straight up a steep hill only to discover yet another false trail at the top. That gave the GM an opportunity to demonstrate how to ski down a hill in a toilet-squat stance. Others were more cautious. Meanwhile the rest of the hashers caught up with the FRB’s. The layout was so complex and diverse that the gang regrouped repeatedly and virtually everyone found themselves at the lead however briefly. Most people took about 90 minutes to complete the circuit and no once complained about it being too short. The scenery was spectacular.

With his habitual attention to detail, the Hash Beer forswore the adjacent field and parked his car on the village road. Hence the circle formed around the beer across the village road. That added to the fun as the GM’s dog, Bushwacked drove cattle off their homeward route into the woods. Passing motorcyclists were likewise amused to drive through the circle center. No doubt the village will remember our visit next time we want to use this area again.

There were seven virgins to celebrate on this occasion. One was a visiting friend of the hares. Two were periodic residents of the Chiangrai who claim to have hashed elsewhere. Four were teachers at the local Montessori school. Three of the latter were responsible for dramatically increasing the representation of expatriate females.

Heineken Piss, Belgian Waffle, Jolly Molly, Stung and Bushwacked were honored with hash names on this occasion. We note in passing that Pile’s companion Gem has mysteriously acquired a new hash name, Flower Power. This goes with her new hat which is aptly decorated.

directions to the hash on st patricks day march 17th

Go north out of downtown Chiang Rai on the highway to Mae Sai.

About 900 meters north of the airport road, you will see the Bandu market on your left and the pedestrian bridge over the highway. About 200 meters beyond the bridge/market, turn left toward the Pong Pra Baht Waterfall.

You will follow the road to the waterfall almost to its end. Not far past the 7 km marker (somewhat obscured on the right side of the road), the road makes a 90º sweeping turn to the left. Shortly after that turn you will pass Huai Luang Reservoir on your left.

About 200 meters past the reservoir, just as the road starts to make its short ascent to the waterfall parking area at the end of the road, turn left on Soi 6 (there will be an HHH sign).

Soi 6 soon changes from cement to a smooth dirt surface. Follow Soi 6 for about 2.95 km until you see the HHH sign, where you can park along the side of the road.

HHH have been around for a couple of years here in Chiang Rai. It is good fun, you meet some nice people and your body has to move a little. And after you have a cold drink (beer, coke, water etc) with your friends.

The May hash is scheduled for Saturday May 20 beginning at 4 p.m.

Yes! There will be a hash this Saturday, May 26. Begins at 4 pm.

Location south of Huai Sak close to the mountain which sprouts up

behind the

reservoir. Leaving the Big C travel south on the Asia Highway and then

turn

east on the Thoeng Road (Highway 1020). Go through the Huai Sak traffic

lights, over the little bridge, past the 15 km stone and then turn

right at

the first soi past the temple (HHH sign). Then go straight out that

road.

You will come to a T-junction where you will turn left (HHH sign) and

immediately be confronted with a large puddle of water. It is not deep

and

it has a cement base. My 20 year-old Honda Civic can cross it with no

problem. People on motorcycles might like to take the small trail

leading

around the puddle on the left. Follow the road until reach a t-junction

where other cars will be parked. From highway to parking is 7 km. Plan

on 30

minutes drive from the Big C.

Here are the directions:for the next chaingrai hash on june 16th start 4pm

1) From Big C travel south until the Mae Gone intersection (highway 1020 to Thoeng)

2) Turn left onto highway 1020 driving east towards Thoeng

3) Between highway/km marker 11km and 12km watch for the school on your left, (Phong Houng I think, but it is the only school between these two markers).

4) After the school on your right there will be a Tambon Administrative Authority building (unfortunately no English) with the 12km marker laying on its side in the grass out front.

5) Immediately following the TAA turn Right at the first road (see HHH sign)-picture attached

6) Travel 0.1 km then turn left at the T junction (there is a small dirt road continuing nearly straight-slightlly offset-but you'll recognize it as a T junction) (see HHH sign)

7) Travel 1km then turn right (see HHH sign)

the next chaingrai hash house harriers saturday 21st july start 4pm

Here are the directions:

Drive south on the superhighway and turn right at the

WatRong Kun (White Temple) intersection. Go to the

end

of that road - approx. 4 km. When you reach the old

Chiang Mai road go directly across it into the village

and look for the HHH signs.

The chosen hare for this month's hash is Trinley (no hash name yet, but this will be his third); for those of you who don't know Trinley, please keep in mind that he is five years old when you think of possible hash names for him. And not to fear--this won't be a bunny trail--as the hare's grandfather, Reverse Thrust, has eagerly laid out the trail for our brave and mighty C. Rai HHH.

The 15 September hash will follow shaded trails on and around Doi Khao Kwai, the hill 4km south of town.

Driving directions: Starting at the Little Duck Hotel (the architectural

marriage of Potala and San Quentin), leave by the western entrance, setting

your trip odometer to 0.0. Turn right from the Little Duck Hotel parking lot onto Phaholyothin Road, heading north toward town.

Take the first left at km 0.6 onto Doi Phabaht Rd. heading west. This T

intersection is marked by a sign for "Napa Lodge." If you miss the turn,

make a U-turn at the PTT gas station 50m beyond on the RH side of Phaholyothin Rd.

Follow Doi Phabaht Rd westward, crossing the old runway at km 1.0, heading toward the temple entrance archway.

Before the temple entrance, turn left to head south along the temple wall.

Turn right after the crematorium grounds at km 1.3 and head west along a

narrow paved road.

Turn sharp left at the King's portrait at km 1.5. Follow Doi Phabaht Rd.

curving generally southwest for two and a half km. Please drive slowly

through the community.

At km 4.0 turn right through a high wooden gate (HHH sign) onto a straight

laterite road heading north toward Doi Khao Kwai. Turn right at km 4.2

(HHH sign) heading east on a narrow dirt road past a lumber shed. Park

in the orchard beyond.

The hash will start promptly at 4 PM to ensure that no participants are

left overnight in the deep woods. On On.

Report of Run #47: Saturday, September 15, 2007

Location: Doi Khao Khwai

Hares: Smoked Weiner assisted by Jolly Molly and the absent Reverse Thruster

Twenty-three hashers showed up for our 47th outing. Nine were male adults all expatriates. There were an equal number of female adults, three of whom were expats. The three others were boys including the five-year hare, his partner in crime, Henry, and Sean son of the Hash Cash.

The hare, Smoked Weiner led the way. From an orchard below the Reverse Thruster palace, it headed straight uphill. There were no checks and no Front Runners. Everyone struggled through the forest clinging to whatever branch enabled them to pull themselves up the steep slope. Dense forest cover kept the place in deep shade. The land was moist and slippery from the previous night’s rain but given the steep drainage, there was no mud. Following the climb, the trail led down to the valley again. Hashers had to leverage every rock and cranny to keep from tumbling head first into the void below. The trail wasn’t long but it covered a lot of territory vertically. Up and down that hill we went at least three times. Late coming virgins Monica and Jane were able to join the main stream by walking up the road which services Doi Phra Baht temple at the top. The view from the temple overlooking Chiangrai to the north was really spectacular.

Smoothie outdid herself with her habitual hospitality. There was enough salad, chicken, sticky rice and fruit to satisfy the hungriest hasher. Meanwhile some of the more energetic members took a dip in the pool. Eventually the group reassembled for the serious business of our hash. The hare, five-year old Trinley needed a name. He didn’t like any of the names proposed so he proposed his grandfather’s original name, “Smoked Weiner.” Being in a smoked mood, he likewise proposed “Smoked Pooh” for Khru Anthony, which the latter proclaimed he would be proud to wear. Carrie got the name “Stupid All The Time.” Noting that Sean was inseparable from his mother, he acquired the name “Superglue.”

I don´t know what happened to Wirgin Bluce when he was trekking in Himalaya. I have heard he was rescued by helicopter.

Something must have happened because he had no clues what was going on at the latest hash. We were 5 FRB´s (Front Running Bastards) and we found at least 6 checks and we arrived more than one hour before Wirgin and the rest came back after their little walk.

But the the whole afternoon was fantastic, beautiful and tasteful!

UNIQUE HASH

the chaingrai mismanagement comittee are handing

total control for this unique hash to the infamous

m&m squad

To coincide with Marc's 40th birthday, the

hash will be moved up one week to the 13th of Oct.

The run will be in the Golden Triangle, taking you to

3 different countries. After hash festivities will be

along the Mekong River. The cost will be 500 baht for

Thai citizens and 1000 baht for farang. The

difference in price is because the cost of entry into

Lao and Burma is cheaper for Thai citizens.

Since the M&M squad will be arranging bus transport,

entry permits, boats, food,beer etc., they need an

accurate head count by this Saturday. If you will be

joining, please let me know as soon as possible. The

M&M squad has a reputation for exceptionally lively

hashes so we anticipate 40 - 50 people from Chiang

Mai, BKK and even Japan. This is one of those hashes

you don't want to miss.

HISTORIC 3 COUNTRIES HASH

THAILAND--MYANMAR--LAOS

over 60 hashers of many nationalities from thailand

and cambodia attended this historic 3 countries hash

on 13th october.

the hash started in typical fashion,start slow and

taper off when it took 2 hours for the coach driver to

arrive at the starting point,but on reflection he did

his best to manoevure cross country to the start

point.

the first leg of about 5k took just under an hour

for the FRBS to arrive at the chiang saen immigration

and were quickly ushered on to to the waiting boats by

the smiling thai officials without any fuss or

problem.

the boats arrived at the myanmar casino after a

choppy crossing due to a cloud burst on the laos side

this time we were welcomed by the myanmar officials

who once again ushered the hashers through.

here we were given the option of joining the FRBS

on a run of about 4k or taking a stroll around the

casino grounds to a restaurant were myanmar beer and

snacks would be served,i was reluctantly persuaded to

take the easy option and was first in line to sample

the excellent myanmar beer.

the next boat ride took the hashers over to laos

again past the laos officials without any fuss,this

time yours truly had no option but to bravely hash

through dense bush and mud after the earlier cloud

burst for at least 3k only to be heckled by the words

"why are we waiting" by some of the hashers waiting on

the boat for the final leg.

the boats dropped the hashers off at a restaurant on

the mekong river were the beer sot,excellent food and

the comedy show in the circle all added to this

historic hash that will never be forgotten

were not satisfied in spending many hours organising

the 3 countries hash so to coinside with marcs 40th

birthday the memorable weekend was concluded with marc

and his charming wife inviting all hashers to a

birthday hash/party at his beautiful land behind

circle banter knew no bounds.

Hi all

Saturday Nov 17 is our anniversary run. It will take place near my farm off the road to the Khon Korn waterfalls. To get there starting at the Big C, go south towards Bangkok on Highway 1 about 10 kilometers. At the traffic light turn right. Drive past the white temple to the end of the road (about 4 km). At the three way intersection turn left. Here you will go another 5 km or so and then turn right at the sign which says Khun Korn Waterfalls (HHH sign). Go along this road about 4 km. Where the road sharply to the left at a temple, (HHH sign) you turn into the temple on your left and park. It will take about 25 minutes to get there from the Big C.

If you are already in town, drive south through Den Haa on the old Chiangmai road. About 15 km beyond Den Haa you come to the run off to Khun Korn Waterfalls. Turn right there and follow the instructions as above. It will take about 20 minutes to get there from the bridge at Pratu Chiangmai.

There will be a short cut for young children and those otherwise not able to do the whole route. That cuts out the most challenging (and exciting) part. So this run is open to all.

This Saturday will be the 4th Annual Chiang Rai Hash. To celebrate the occasion, Wild Woman and Wirgin Bluce have offered to host the party at their property on the Khun Korn Waterfall road. Wild Woman will wine and dine attendees but she asks you contact her directly at 081-602-1666 so that she knows how much food to prepare. Also the new GM and supporting offices will be chosen so we need your nominations and votes. Because the sun is setting earlier, THE HASH WILL START AT 3-30PM

There will be two courses - an easy course for the children and the less adventurous and a longer course that offers some of the most spectacular scenery of any CR hash. Wirgin Bluce has already sent out driving directions (SEE ABOVE POST) but if you have any questions, give me a call.

I have been living out of the country for over a decade. A Bangkok native, but will be living in Chiang Rai soon. I am looking for activities or social events that my Fahrang husband will enjoy and feel comfortable with, particularly as a warm up for his new life in Chiang Rai.

Hashing . . . it's a mixture of athleticism and sociability, hedonism and hard work; a refreshing break from the nine-to-five routine. Hashing is an exhilaratingly fun combination of running, orienteering, and partying, where bands of harriers and harriettes chase hares on eight-to-ten kilometer-long trails through town, country, jungle, and desert, all in search of exercise, camaraderie, and good times.

Hashing, as we know it today, began in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1938, when a group of restive British company men started a hare & hounds running group. They named the group after their meeting place, the Selangor Club, aka the "Hash House." Hash House Harrier runs were patterned after the traditional British public school paper chase. A "hare" would be given a short head start to blaze a trail, marking his devious way with shreds of paper, soon to be pursued by a shouting pack of "harriers." Only the hare knew where he was going . . . the harriers followed his marks to stay on trail. Apart from the excitement of chasing down the wily hare, solving the hare's marks and reaching the end was its own reward, for there, thirsty harriers would find a tub of iced-down beer.

Hashing died during World War II (Japanese occupying forces being notoriously opposed to civilian fun), but came back to life in the post-war years, spreading slowly through Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand, then exploding in popularity in the late 70s and early 80s. Today there are thousands of Hash House Harrier clubs in all parts of the world, complete with newsletters, directories, and regional and world hashing conventions.

Despite its growth, hashing hasn't strayed far from its British and Malaysian roots. A typical hash "kennel" is a loosely-organized group of 20-40 men and women who meet weekly or biweekly to chase the hare. We follow chalk, flour, or paper, and the trails are never boring. When forced to, we'll run the occasional street or alley, but in general we prefer shiggy . . . fields, forests, jungles, swamps, streams, fences, storm drains, and cliffs. And although some of today's health-conscious hashers may shun a cold beer in favor of water or a diet soda, trail's end is still a party. Perhaps that's why they call us the "drinking club with a running problem!"

So . . . if you'd like to spice up your running program with fun, good company, new surroundings, and physical challenge, try hashing. Just remember one thing . . . never wear new shoes to the hash!

Our next Hash is Saturday December 15!

Here are the directions to the Oiled's house the and HHH trail site. It will take about 35 minutes to get there from the Big C so please plan accordingly. We must be there by 3-30 pm at the latest as there will be an Etem taking hashers out to the starting point.

Traveling From the South of Town Toward Mae Sai, Using Super Highway A2.

At the first traffic light just after the bridge that crosses the Mae Kok River, hang a LEFT and proceed west for a distance of 4.5 kms.. At this 3 way intersection,(HHH sign) which is a dangerous one,swing carefully to the right and proceed north for 5.0kms until you connect with another 3 way intersection. Here you will notice 2 large public sector blue bill boards (HHH sign). Drift through this intersection to the right carefully and proceed north about 90 meters to our Soi 5 (HHH sign). Make a right turn on Soi 5 and proceed east for about 900 meters. We are at the corner of the road that leads up to Wat Pra Tat Gaut Gaow and Soi 5 (HHH sign). Look for parking along Soi 5, or along road that leads to the Wat. VIP parking is available to the early birds.

Option No. 2

Traveling From The West Side of Town Using Mae Fae Lauang Bridge.

Travel north from the MF bridge 6 kms. Follow the line of the road and do not make any turns until you arrive at The Ban Sai Moon Sam Yak,a 3 way intersection (HHH sign). This turning point is noted again by the same huge official blue public sector billboards. Turn right here and proceed North to Soi 5, a distance of only 90 meters! (HHH sign). Turn right to go East down Soi 5, 900 meters and begin looking for parking as you approach the road leading to the Wat (HHH sign).

The Signs To Look For.

There will only be four signs posted. They are :

Helping Hand is the hare at the fifty-first Chiangrai "Start Slowly and Taper Off" Hash on Saturday January 19 beginning at 4:00 pm. Driving instructions are as follows:

The hash will begin from the parking area of an orchid farm on the west end of town on the river bank near Chiang Rai beach. To get there:

Drive west out of Chiang Rai on Thanon Ratcha Yotha (the old road to Chiang Mai). Turn right at the first set of traffic lights (called Den Haa see HHH sign). The road passes the military barracks. Turn left at the first major turning on the left (HHH sign) and drive towards Rai Mae Fah Luang. Turn right (HHH sign) opposite the entrance to Rai Mae Fah Luang through an entrance gate to Country Homes. Follow the road through an S-bend - left then right (HHH sign) and then take the first left (HHH sign). Follow this road all the way to the end (almost a kilometer) and park on the edge of the river. There are about 8 parking spaces there.

From the Little Duck Hotel: Head north on the A1 and turn left at the first traffic lights. Follow that road (Thanon San Khok Chang) through 3 major intersections (traffic lights) ie over Phalyothin, Sunambin and Ratchyotha. Go past the military barracks and then take the first left turn (HHH sign) once past the barracks. That road veers right after 500m and becomes the road out to Rai Mae Fah Luang. Turn right opposite the entrance to Rai Mae Fah Luang into Country Homes (HHH sign). Follow the road through a left bend then run right (HHH sign). Turn left at the first opportunity thereafter (HHH sign). Follow this road all the way to the end and park on the edge of the river.

Plan on twenty minutes from the Little Duck Hotel.
