Over half of businesses surveyed not aware of AEC

BANGKOK: -- The lack of interest in Asean developments among business communities within Asean has been cited as a possible cause behind the slow progress of implementing the Asean Economic Community (AEC) 2015, said the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The international financial institution conducted a survey to find out whether business firms within the region were aware of the AEC 2015. The survey’s findings are discussed in a recent online publication titled “The Asean Economic Community: A Work in Progress”.

“There is concern that part of the reason for the slow progress of implementing AEC 2015 may have to do with the Asean business community showing little or no interest in Asean developments,” a summary of the survey said.

ADB gave as an example that it was more likely for respondent firms to be aware of the free trade agreements (FTAs) between Asean and the People’s Republic of China than of AEC 2015.

The primary concerns of the respondent firms were non-tariff barriers, including different regulatory standards, excessive regulation and lack of information about foreign business environments.

The survey was carried out in nine ASEAN member states, with a total 381 firms, said ADB.

Overall, more than half or 55 per cent of the respondents said they were not aware of AEC 2015.

i remember seeing somewhere,a map of the world produced in Thailand, not sure what era,but it had good detail of Thailand ,with Thailand printed in bold letters, the rest of the world was a white blank that just said 'not thailand',if you look at current road maps were they border other countries, yes you have the name of the country, but most maps i have been used to for other regions of the world will at least show, major roads and towns in the adjoining country, but on Thai maps at least the one i have it's just a white blank, maybe that explains it.

If I had to get a massage from ONE of the people in the picture, it would definitely be Yingluck.

I'd worry that whilst she was saying nice things about my body she was actually smirking to her friends behind my back but I agree Yingluck is definitely the prettiest leader in all of ASEAN.

would u expect anything less? Of course they don't, because from birth they are told what to eat, what to think, and what to say, and so they just plod on looking for direction from somebody.

It might help if the brainwashing in the schools was reduced a bit.

When every schoolchild has to chant the lines below every day, it gets easier to understand why most of the Thai people have little or no interest in the world outside:

Thai people are special, Thailand is special, we are special people.

Thai people are very fortunate to have a King who is like our father, and a Queen who is like our mother.

Our King and Queen are the greatest royal couple in the whole wide world.

We, the Thai people, are the greatest in the world also.

In our water, there are abundance of fish and in our field, there are golden rice paddies.

There is no other country on this earth that can compare with our beloved Thailand.

We love our King and Queen, we love our Country and we love our religion

What on earth is that that every schoolchild has to chant??

It certainly isn't the national anthem!

the average business overhere

is not interested in:

- learning another language than thai, why bother

- selling you a good, they are paid by the day, they dont care if you want information about something or not

how many times you ask (or your wife) if they have xyz item in stock and the short answer is : MAI MEE

but you have a look yourself and find it on some shelve later...

I am 100% sure a survey (in English) on TV would have close to 100% knowledge. Maybe not detailed knowledge

but the broad picture and very few are in business. Oh well, a tsunami of business competition and opportunity

will soon be here. Buckle up Thailand.

Good grief, doesn't anyone on here bother to read anything ? -- or is everyone just looking for a chance to bash Thailand ? You all just skim a little and then bash away merrily ?

The survey was done in the NINE member countries of ASEAN, and NOT only in Thailand. In those NINE member countries the survey, rightly or wrongly, showed that 55% of businesses had never heard of AEC. The survey is NOT about Thailand.

-----but don't let the OP or the topic interfere with your Thai bashing spree.

As is the norm in Thailand what should have been an opportunity is going to become an Albatross and this Government who entered into this agreement for face value is going to have to explain why a lot of thing will not go in favor of Thailand.

So aren't you at least curious to know which ASEAN member state they didn't bother to survey?

Gawd. What a stupid article. Given that most people in any economy work in the non traded sector, then there is going to be little need for knowing what it is.

But hey, as a way of reinforcing cultural superiority, the article does the trick. Well done OP.
