Still no sign of missing Phuket child, Nong Dear

PHUKET: -- More than two weeks since she disappeared, six-year-old Nong Dear is still missing, police confirmed today (December 18).

Apart from the extreme stress of wondering what happened to the child, the family have been hit with a further disaster. On Sunday (December 15), Nong Dear’s father, Thanoo Tubkaew, who had gone out to get various sacred objects to assist in prayers for the child’s return, had an accident on his motorbike, breaking bones in his left foot.

When The Phuket News visited the family home in Soi 4 of Chalong’s Koktanode community, Soi 4, Mr Thanoo said, “We have fortune tellers coming here everyday. We follow whatever they suggest we do.

“Some people may think we are credulous, but we have no choice. We have done everything, we have searched everywhere in the community.”

He and his wife Jaroon used to run a somtam stall in the soi but now that she has to look after her husband as well as worrying desperately about her daughter, the stall has been closed.

On Wednesday she told The Phuket News, her voice depressed, “We are still looking for her. We have closed our stall since she went missing.”

Last Friday (December 13) Pol Lt Col Witchakom Khamjampa led four police officers to question family members and neighbours in the community. The officers also visited a filthy pool at the back of the community where, some neighbours said, they had sometimes seen Nong Dear sitting on a log on her own.

Mr Thanoo said, “We climbed down into the water [to search for her], and also removed all the weeds and morning glory [from the pond].” But there was still no sign of the child.

Nong Dear’s aunt, Surin “Rin” Sridow told The Phuket News that a neighbour had reported hearing a child screaming, apparently in pain, on Thursday or Friday (December 5 or 6). But the neighbour said she was not sure which day.

Police also visited the office of the nearby Sun Palm Village, and asked to look at security camera footage from the day Nong Dear disappeared, but the footage gave no clues and an OrBorTor camera nearby is out of order.

In any case, there is another way to get in and out of the community that is not covered by cameras.

Nong Dear disappeared after being dropped close to home on December 6 by a family friend. There has been no sighting of her since then.

The family and friends have been putting up posters with Nong Dear’s photo and contact phone numbers not just in the community but all around Chalong with a plea for any information.

Numbers to call are 086-9544093 (Nong Dear’s older sister Dow); 082-2854930 (her aunt Rin); or Chalong Police at 076-381247.

What sort of family friend would drop a young child off... Near home... I hope negligence charges are laid ... It wouldnt hurt the Thai community to understand that with society there are rules and responsibilities that need to be understood...

This is very, very sad and does not look good at all.

In general social responsibility in Thailand is a lot better than in the West. So IMO it would be a very bad idea to try and impose the western ideas in this respect on Thailand.

How can anyone mention Thailand and social responsibility in the same breath, also have not seen any posting that suggests that the Thai's do not indeed love their children, however, social responsibilities simply do not exist within the majority outside the kampong mentalities that abound.
