Mincemeat (for Christmas mince pies)

Recommended Posts

Last 2 years bought mincemeat (in jars for Christmas mincepies) at the big Tesco Lotus, this year they don't have, also tried Tops at Central and Tops at Robinson Phuket Town with no luck. Anyone seen any about?

Thanks.

Suggest you avoid buying meat that has already been minced.

You NEVER KNOW just what you are getting....maybe the scraps that came off the cutting-room floor.

At the very least, if you are not able to mince the meat yourself, buy slabs of it, get it weighed, and then ask the butcher to mince it while you wait and WATCH.

Hope that helps!

At this time of the year he would be talking about "mince meat" used for pie fillings and pastries (as noted in the heading), not a slab of meat ground up for hamburgers or whatever.

Mincemeat, the traditional filling for mince pies, is a spicy preserve comprising a mixture of dried fruit, apple, suet and candied fruit and spices steeped in rum or brandy. It has been part of British cookery for centuries and did originally contain meat, though now the only meat present is in the suet.

The mincemeat for pies and pastries is an American staple at this time of the year. I think most Americans would think " ground meat " before " mince" when it comes to things like hamburgers.

Incidentally, I have seen it at Friendship in Pattaya, which I realize won't be a big help to someone in Phuket, but maybe someone in Pattaya is looking for it too.
