Work permits and dual pricing in Ayutthaya and Sukhothai

Featured Replies

Anyone got any recent experience with getting the Thai price at Ayutthaya Historical Park or Sukhothai Historical Park? I've read reports that the people at the entrance are insisting you pay the foreigner price even if you have a work permit.

Also there was a report a while ago about being able to buy tickets to national parks in 7/11. Did that ever get off the ground?

The sheer hassle of visiting anywhere like this takes the enjoyment out of the day. Most times would be visiting with friends from abroad who then would need to pay 10x the price. Decision a long time ago to give all places with two prices a wide berth. You asking is obviously an issue or you would have just gone regardless.

It's even worse than PattayaPhom says. At the Sukhothai park one is obliged to purchase multiple tickets, each corresponding to a different sub-area of the park. I walked past such an additional checkpoint a few months ago; the woman in the booth started screaming 'YOO YOO YOO YOO YOO.' I ignored the bitch.

I always show my Thai university ID which allows me to get the Thai price as a resident. Usually the people look at it, wai me and I pay the local price. At Sukkothai historical park it took 6 people staring at it to begrudgingly allow me to pay the Thai price. Then instead of just passing my ID back, the ticket taker actually threw my ID back to me. I don't know what their problem is there. I went once and although I thoroughly enjoyed looking around and riding a bicycle, I won't return.

Asking Thai people about it they said maybe the staff takes the money from the foreigner ticket sales and just rings it up as a Thai admission. The local people in the area were some of the nicest I have met in 6 years living here. I asked for directions at a candy shop as it was dark and I couldn't find my way back to my hotel. The shop owner closed his store early and gave me a ride on his motorcycle back to my hotel. I had really made a wrong turn--I was couple KM out of the way.

I've only been on a tour to Ayutthaya so I'm sure the foreigner price was paid.

I had sukhothai to myself songkran 2010, I paid for bike and can't remember paying for anything else.

Dont go to ayutthaya.you will be charged 100's of baht to see a pile of red brick water flood damaged bricks.
