You live your own life, make your own choices in life, and you have to decide for yourself whether it is a "success" or a "failure".

Personally, for me, I have:

  • Been married, had one son, who died shortly after birth.
  • Adopted a Vietnamese daughter, she never got out of Vietnam in 1975
  • Had a Thai girlfriend .... not married ..... and raised her 3 children, and one grand daughter.

Don't know if you consider that a "success" or a "failure" .... and I don't really care.

It was just what I did.

The world is collapsing under the combined detritus of 7.2 billion people (of which at least 7 billion are idiots) so I am proud to say that I have not had children and never will. Personally I think people without children should be publicly honoured and get a large cash reward, and those with children should be vilified.

As for getting married I cant see the point at all, though at least it causes no harm to the planet.

Having a wife and kids has nothing to do with being a success or failure unless it is important to you. It is impossible to guess which you are without a lot more information.

I agree UG. It's what's important to you that matters.

A friend in his mid-sixties never had children. His nett worth is around £450 million.

But I can't help but feel for him. He can't have children and all the Bentley's and all the big fancy stuff and all the money just cannot fill that void. I feel he's missed out on the best bit of life and know he would have been the best Dad too.

I'd sooner have the kids using the living room here in our house in Issan as a skate park, charging around on rollerblades on a Saturday morning and all the laughter and joy that brings than what my friend has.

I still don't understand why we are supposed to have kids and like it ?

Ah, yes, my friends told me that kids bring joy... but I still have a lot of fun with all my luxuries and playboy life, so this is maybe why I don't need anyone to mess my life...

People who do not want kids often are called selfish when in my opinion THE ONLY REAL SELFISH are the ones who have kids and create a life that didn't ask anything and didn't ask for all the problems that being alive brings (study, work, be sick, see people die...)

Someone must be really selfish to want a little copy of himself to control when we know how crazy is going the world...

I have authority on anyone around me, women, staff, etc... and don't need to have kids to prove that I am successful in my life.

I think people should adopt more because at least this is useful: you do not create a life and just help a life that is already here.

I don't see how you came about putting marriage and children in the same boat?

Having children is the best imo but being married is ok.

Sorry I didn't vote. If you don't want to get married and have kids, who am I to judge you.

Everyone has choices in their short life on earth, not everyone was cut out to be a parent or for that matter a husband or wife. I was very lucky I had the best of both worlds. because of being a good dancer, never ran out of women and I also have my children that have brought me much happiness in my life.

When I came to Thailand I did live in the fast lane for less then 6 months, I soon tired of that and Married, If I had never married a Thai wife, I would never had known what it was like to have such a caring wife, who willingly does everything for me (as I also try to do for her) the little things my western wive's would always nag about or never think of doing. I stopped dancing 13 years ago!

My life has been a success due to my personal choices to be married and have children, I would not have lived it any other way!

When it is my time to leave this earth, the only thing of value I will leave, is my children!

I'm the same as the OP.

The question should be "Are you happy as you are now?"

I am and mostly have always been apart from the job I was doing which was seriously damaging my health, hence the reason I retired at 50 and came here to live. I have been living with my girlfriend for almost 7 months now. She has an adult son, nieces and nephews along with a great-nephew and a great niece.

Plus - never married so no ex-wives/alimony/fatal news headlines.

No kids (that I'm aware of) so no future miscreants/welfare bums/over-privileged, spoiled, whiny, undisciplined, disrespectful brats to deal with.

Unless you have children you will never, ever understand. All the luxuries and playboy lifestyle in the world does not compare to the feeling of coming home from work and your kids run out to meet you with unconditional love.

Your parents made a big mistake bringing you in to the world. You still call them selfish?

You have authority on the people around you.....women...staff. Let me hazard a guess, you are a 5 foot tall, balding, control freak with little man syndrome.

I never thought I would have a child.

A filipina woman wanted a child with me. So we had one. I was 49 years of age. I lived many experiences in my life.

Raising a child was the best one of those experiences.

But do not know how that would translate in a vote....
