Beach Road wheelchair crossings get rolling … again

PATTAYA:--With Pattaya’s traffic-light system having proved a monumental and expensive failure, city hall has ordered construction of raised “speed bump walkways” to slow cars and help pedestrians cross Beach Road.

The surfaces - designed to be 20 cm. high and 7 m. wide - were designed to keep crossing pedestrians in groups where they can be seen by motorists who flagrantly ignored red lights at pedestrian crossings throughout the city. They also make it easier for wheelchairs to move between sidewalks.

Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh said the accessibility measures, part of a 139 million baht beachfront renovation project, are being installed at the intersections of Soi 3, Soi 9 and near Walking Street. Construction, however, has proved to be another Pattaya infrastructure boondoggle.

The walkways’ height and narrow width were being blamed for a string of accidents, mostly involving drunk and speeding motorcyclists who refused to slow down or barreled through construction zones while drunk driving. Instead of ordering police to crack down on reckless drivers, Ekasingh on Dec. 19 ordered construction halted,

No, its not to high, it was positioned there for a reason. No one wants anyone in a wheel chair to disturb the drunks and speeders. Just like all traffic lights and stop signs in Thailand, nothing is enforced, so why would anyone want to stop?

Excuse me City Hall , but if “ Pattaya’s traffic-light system having proved a monumental and expensive failure “ why is that exactly?blink.png

The wheelchairer brigade are getting preferential treatment over able-bodied pedestrians.

More injuries occur to able-bodied people per-centage wise. So that needs to be addressed with a higher priority.

What is the use of being able to cross beach road ion a wheelchair?

Once you are on the other side of the road from the beach there are no footpaths that can be used by someone in a wheelchair.

Is it foolish to suggest that the police catch and fine drunk drivers speeding through pedestrian crossings? I feel sure that if there was a 10,000 baht fine as a minimum, this would deter the idiots and be a great revenue source for the cops.

Yep.

Nope. Can't collect, not gonna stand there and check except for the odd "crackdown."

Could be another excuse to harass farangs, however.
