Just been watching the BBC news, and they were telling of a new line of footwear from the Phillippines that is selling World-wide. Easy to make, can buy for as little as 1$ or as dear as 10$.

What is this brand new offering called.............

The Flip-flop.....................................Think it'll catch on?

Where I come from 'thongs' is something much more pleasurable!

I thought that thongs are the plastic v things, while flip flops have the band across the foot. Jandals are NZ indeed... and y fronts are a particularly unfashionable style of underwear for men, usually an off white colour. I didn't know English people referred to g strings as thongs...

Thongs to me are g-strings. Flip flops are horrible rubber things my mum used to make me wear when little.

I prefer birkenstocks myself - expensive but last for years.

In the 1990's, the US Navy (which contains a huge contingent of Filipino nationals under an old program linked to the US bases there) changed the nomenclature as the term was considered politically insensitive. The banned name was switched to "shower shoes".

To call them flip-flops now is a chargeable offense.
