children under 14 and visas

Featured Replies

I have been told that children under 14 do not need visas for staying long in thailand. I have read there is no overstay fine for childten under 14. When asking my thai embassy in my country they are not sure. I am quite happy to get the visa if required, but This makes a big difference for me finatially..cost of visas for her, visa runs for her etc. Who can tell me where it officially states under 14 do not need visas.

Children do need a visa or visa exempt entry, but under 15 years old they are not fined for overstay.

It is always best to stay legal and at least to arrive with a tourist visa if flying to Thailand.

If going to school an extension of stay would be 1,900 baht.

My embassy back home indicated that I would need one for her. So I got one.

When I got to Phuket immigration the volunteer said she doubted that I would need to extend my child's visa on the basis of the very point you make. She said she would check.

The immigration officer indicated that because she had a visa we would need to extend and continue in that vein.

I have got her on a Non-Ed as she is at school. I am much happier having her with a visa. Even though it costs a little more.

If you do not then she is overstaying if she does not have a visa, and while she will not pay a fine I personally am not comfortable with it.

Off topic, so further questions in the family and children section.

A child would in such siutation, if not legitimized by the father, have no legal father thus can only asume the name of the mother.

In practise in Thailand many amphurs allow a child to take the name of the father, but I would say that is not in accordence with the law.

I got one in December 2013 for my three years old daughter ...it's better to have one if u travel frequently around the world.....eventually we still need process visa for our kids to stay legally before they turn 14,if we can do it now, why not?

I got one tourist visa for my daughter, but if your idea is to stay in Thailand for a long period, then better to see the options on long term visas.

I currently travel to and from the UK with my 4 year old British Child. I do not get any type of visa for the child.

The child over stays upto 5 months at a time.

When we leave Thailand

  • there is no fine for overstaying
  • the child does not do a visa run
  • there is no failing to 90 day report fine
  • there is no problem

This is current information as of 2014

Before my child was born, i visited Jomtien immigration office and asked the office if a visa and what visa is needed for a child. The visa officer laughed and said 'no visa was needed'.

The only problem you will have will not be in Thailand either entering or leaving,

it will be getting on the plane in the UK as if your child does not have a visa, then a return ticket for a 30 day period will be required.

Yes,, this is completely correct.

the thai immigration will give a large fine to airlines that allow passengers to board a plane without a visa to last the total length of the dates of your flight tickets.

so,, if your holiday (tickets) exceed 30 days, then you NEED to buy a SINGLE ticket (for your child) to leave thailand WITHIN the first 30 day period).

you can buy a cheap one way to Kuala Lumpur or singapore or some other local country with www.airasia.com

(you dont necessarily have to ever use this ticket) - you would just be buying it to get past the airline check in and be able to board the plane to go to Thailand.
