EGAT needs 3 billion baht for 2 new power plant projects

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) will seek a loan of 3 billion baht for the construction of 2 new power plants.

Norkhun Sitthipong (ณอคุณ สิทธิพงษ์), deputy permanent secretary for energy, said EGAT board has already approved EGAT’s 2006-2007 investment plan under which the Songkhla and South Bangkok power plants will be built.

Mr. Norkhun said EGAT estimated to make a profit of 24 billion baht this year which is lower than the set target of 26 billion baht as users have cut down their electricity consumption.

With an annual profit of "24 billion baht", one really wonders why EAGT should want to take out a loan for a mere 3 billion baht? :D I guess it makes more sense doing it on the never-never, than reinvesting profits back into the business. Ah, the luxuries of being a monopoly................. :o
