Cambodia Likely to Achieve One Million Tons Rice Export Target in 2015, Claims Minister

Cambodia is close to achieving its goal of exporting one million tons of rice in 2015, according to the country's Minister of Commerce.

Cambodia exported 378,856 tons of rice in 2013, 84% more than around 201,899 tons in 2012. Cambodia’s rice exports have grown steadily since 2010 when the government targeted exports of one million tons of milled rice by 2015. According to local sources, Cambodia exported around 105,000 tons of rice in 2010; about 202,000 tons of rice in 2011; and about 206,000 tons of rice in 2012. Cambodia exported around 378,856 tons of rice in 2013, up about 84% from the previous year.

A government report states that nearly 84 companies in Cambodia export rice to about 16 countries. Cambodia exports mostly to the EU nations. According to the EU data, Cambodia exported around 195,544 tons of rice to the EU in Marketing Year (MY) 2012-13 (October - September), which is up about 79% from previous year. The EU's rice imports consist 16% of Cambodian rice.

Cambodia’s Commerce Minister says that Cambodia rice is gaining popularity in export markets. The minister says that Cambodian fragrant rice, which was awarded the world's best rice for two consecutive years, is famous for its delicious flavor and has a good export market. The minister claims that Cambodia can produce about 9 million tons of paddy rice yearly, of which around 3 million tons of milled rice could be exported.

However, the USDA estimates Cambodia’s MY 2013-14 rice production to reach around 4.9 million tons (milled basis), up about 6.5% from around 4.6 million tons in the MY 2012-13. Rice consumption in Cambodia is estimated at around 3.8 million tons, while Cambodia’s rice exports are expected to increase to around 1 million tons in MY 2013-14, up slightly from around 975,000 tons in MY 2012-13.
