NancyL Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Just received a call and email from Saskia, an English language customer service rep at Rajavej Hospital. They need a couple units of O-negative blood ASAP (no other type can substitute). Here are the details from her: Thanks so much for putting out the message on Thai Visa for us. We need 700 cc of blood (2 units) so more than 1 donor would be good. The patient is scheduled to have surgery on the 26th of January. Below is a list of qualifications to donate blood and the process. Blood Donor Eligibility Qualifications Age 17 - 70 yrs. Weight - more than 45 kilos Good health Plenty of sleep Blood pressure – less than 180 mmHg Body tattoos and piercings – less than 1 yr. (I think she means body tattoo/piercing must be more than a year old. I couldn't reach her for clarification, but looked this up on the internet. Other sources prohibit blood donation if body tattoo/piercing is less than a year old.) Refrain from smoking for 1 hr. before donating Refrain alcohol drinking for 12 hrs. before donating No antibiotic drugs for 7 days before donating No risky sexual behavior I anyone is interested, please do the following: Call Rajavej Chiang Mai Hospital laboratory department @ 053 801 999 Ext. 225. State your purpose (donate blood), name and phone number. Our lab will set up an appointment for the donor at the Red Cross. This process will take approximately 1 hr. One of our lab personnel will call the potential donor back (approx 1 hr.) to give him/her the information they need to go to the Red Cross for blood donation. The donor will need to go to the Red Cross at the appointed time. http://www.farangfriendly.com/red-cross-chiang-mai Kind regards, Saskia.

Thighlander Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 and that place right across the street (from red cross) with the steel tables does a great Rad Na for cheap. BTW, I can't read Thai (except numbers), but it appears that they are always in need of blood donors at Red Cross.
NancyL Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 Thanks, Dave for correcting the map. Yes, Thighlander, the Red Cross always is in need of donors, so if someone is so inclined it would be good karma to go see them directly, no matter what your blood type. It seems, though, that when Rajavej schedules an elective procedure for someone with an unusual blood group, like O-negative they do the right thing in making sure they have the appropriate blood on hand in advance. Not certain what other hospitals do. I never am contacted by them, so presumably they use other communications channels, but Rajavej reports that the Thai Visa folks have come thru in the past when they've needed blood more common in "our" countries. Way-to-go folks!
harrry Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Whilst I am pleased to know that they do try to help people to get the blood they need it would be nice to know that the hospital did not make a huge profit on what is freely given and in particular did not charge based on nationality.
