Suvarnabhumi to see 2 million passengers throughout Chinese New Year holidays

BANGKOK, 28 January 2014 (NNT) - 658 flights will be added at Suvarnabhumi Airport during the Chinese New year this year with more than two million passengers, according to the airport's projection.

Suvarnabhumi Director Raweewan Netrakhawesana said on Tuesday that the airport was expected to accommodate around 2.03 million passengers or 156,336 people a day during the Chinese New Year from 27 January – 8 February 2014. This number of passengers was lower than the same period last year by 0.64%. Among the 658 additional flights, 602 of them were international flights and the rest domestic. Most of the flights were from China.

The airport festively decorated the interior of its passenger terminal buildings and would organize special activities to welcome tourists from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore from 30 – 31 January, said the director.

Due to political rallies in Bangkok and their effects on road traffic, Suvarnabhumi Airport recommends passengers to leave for the airport at least four hours prior to their flights and use electric trains instead of cars.

BfCgj8lCAAAVG4o-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force stated today that he was concerned about the coming elections which will be held on February 2, voicing worries of the potential violence that might break out.

He said however, that the air force will support any decision made by the Election committee.

Air Chief Marshal Prajin Jantong, the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force, commented today that the commanders-in-chief of the armed forces were concerned with the current political turmoil in the country.

He stated that no one in the armed forces wishes to see a repeat of the violence that broke out on January 26 which was the date for advance voting for voters who could not conveniently vote on the actual day of voting.

He stated that the air force will support any decision made by the Election Committee as it always has but declined to give any recommendations to the government.

He said that the matter was a political problem and must be solved by politics through democratic process.

Commenting on a request by the secretary general for the People’s Democratic reform Committee (PDRC) to deploy troops to ensure the safety of the protesters, ACM Prajin said in reply that no provisions for such an action has been prepared and that the air force must act in accordance with the Emergency Decree and the Center for the Administration of Peace and Order.

Govt to extend diesel tax cut for 1 month instead of 3

BANGKOK, 28 February 2014 (NNT) - The Election Commission (EC) has advised the government to extend its diesel excise tax reduction for one month at a time, saying a longer tax cut might create unfairness in the general election.

Deputy spokesman of the PM’s Office Chalitrat Chantharubeksa said the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday agreed to prolong the diesel oil excise tax decrease of 0.005 baht/liter for one month, from 1 February – 28 February 2014, as requested by the Ministry of Finance.

The government had earlier intended to lengthen the tax cut for three months but later decided to shorten the extension to one month after the EC showed signs of disapproval.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the diesel excise tax cut will help stabilize diesel price, lower the cost of living and benefit to the country’s economic growth.
