can foreigners use a Thai nickname?

Featured Replies

I don't see why Calo would be hard to say for Thais. They have all of those sounds.

Personally, I find it annoying when people make up nick names. In china and Korea all of my students had English names, but no one outside of the class knew them.

Tends to be said either Kao, Klao, or Caol.

Just use one of those then :)

Knew I guy many yrs ago in Phnom Penh. His name was Carl, the Khmer staff women at the lodging could not say it.

Cow!

I would snicker ever time I heard that

Absolutely--Thai's just shorten everything so your nick name is Calo. Spell it แคโล่. It's catchy and Thai's will remember it easy especially with that falling 'o' on the last syllable.

Hi-So is a fitting name for starbucks and most bkk thais will probably know what it means

and be amused

My Thai nick name is "Daddy" to many.

Many call me saparot,

When people call me Farng I tell them that I am not a Guava ( farang ) and I am a pineapple ( saparot ).

Lilith? good luck!

You should hear my Thai wife try to pronounce the name Carl!

The first couple of months she lived in the U.S. she could not help but giggle when ever she met a guy named Jim! cheesy.gif

KalokelOOO SavatolEEE

what is difficult?

My nick name is Keenok, I have earned it.

What's wrong with Sally?

The staff calls me Kuhn Khem, I think it means "Great One"

Just use farang. It is what they will call you anyway.smile.png Seriously just think of a standard thai nickname like Lek or Daeng or anything as long as it easy for you to pronounce correctly. It will save a lot of hassle.

I don't know why he want to give his name at starbucks....

But there many additional farangs nicknames:

Farang bah

Farang sokprok

Farang kineau

Farang kee nok

Farang walan

I can't really decide which one fits me best.....biggrin.png

Hahahaha, damn that's brilliant! I've never heard that before. Just hilarious in its originality.

Give me strength!

Yes........but, it'll make you sound like a total <deleted> to other westerners (and possibly Thais, too).

Yeah cause my actual nick name is the same as a thai nick name, so yeah im a real <deleted>, posts like that make you sound like one or at best someone with a limited imagination.

Have you guys never been to starbucks? They ask your name, same as they do at True Coffee.. and at most big coffee shops.
