Just quit my teaching job, but my visa goes until Feb 23, 2014. Do I have to leave before this date?

Today (Saturday) I called my agency and told them I would not be returning to work on Monday. I work Monday-Friday. I never filed for the visa extension because I already knew I would be quitting before my visa expired. I received a work permit two weeks ago, but I left it in my desk as instructed.

Do I need to leave the country before February 23rd? If they cancel my work permit, does this affect my non-immigrant B visa?

Is the agency capable of canceling the permit before Monday? The agency is located several hours outside my town, so it would take them a while to come out here and physically get the permit from my school.

Where can I find official, up to date information on this topic?

Thanks!

If you are not on an Extension of Permission to Stay i.e you are on a 90 day entry from a non immigrant 'b' visa obtained from a consular facilty outside of Thailand, then your 90 day non 'b' entry is good to the 23rd February.

This is the case whether or not your WP is cancelled.

Here is the cancellation form which can be filed either by your employer or yourself.

Cancellation form needs filing at your local Labour Dept which is probably open 08:30 - 16:30 Monday - Friday excluding official holidays.

Thanks! Whose responsibility is it to cancel the work permit? Would anything bad happen to me (the teacher) if neither myself, nor my employer bothers to cancel the work permit? I don't intend to work in Thailand for the rest of my stay here.

Should you ever wish to work in Thailand at any time in the future, then an uncancelled Work Permit will cause you problems.

Better you check with your employer and make sure it's cancelled, you should have retained the WP (it's yours, not the employer's), as you need it to cancel the WP yourself.

A post giving confusing and inaccurate information has been removed.

A visa is not extended only a permit to stay can be extended.

Again, thanks for all the responses.

Clarification: I arrive in Thailand on September 24th with a 60 day tourist visa, and then obtained my 90 day non-immigrant b visa in Laos which expires Feb 23rd. Is this 90 day visa an actual visa, or a visa extension?

I plan to stay in Thailand traveling through early March. This means I will make a visa run shortly before February 23rd.

If I make my visa run around February 15th, should I say that my job ended just a few days before February 15th? Does it look bad to have stayed in Thailand as a non-worker on my non-immigrant b visa?

What do I tell the Thai immigration officers?

I quit my job and now I want to re-enter as a tourist?

I had to leave my job because of (insert sympathetic story here), so now I am re-entering as a tourist?

My contract just ended, and I'm not sure whether or not they ever got around to processing my work permit?

You can stay until your permitted to stay date that you got when you entered the country. The visa expiration date does not matter.

Just leave as normal there will be no questions from immigration.
