Lost birth certificate

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My Thai girlfriend has lost her birth certificate. They gave her a copy but the translation office say to her that she must have a version signed by three members of her family + photo on it. Actually she has a different document. Can you confirm me that for a visa application, she must have this version signed by her family?

Can the translation office make the legalization also?

Thank!

VISA application is for Belgium

Yes but the translation office said she must have paper signed by 3 members of family. What do you think?

The translation office is wrong. Have the copy stamped by the amphur where her parents applied for a birth certificate. Get a translation in an office on the list of the embassy. Get both translation and copy legalized by foreign affairs and by the embassy.

You might want to get 2 or three sets so your wife doesn't have to travel back to Thailand when she wants to apply for Belgian nationality.

The translation office probably talks about the case the certificate got also lost by the amphur, which is probably not your case.

Just make certain when you get your translation done it has an official stamp on it.

Why don't you just get an official replacement from the amphoe?

Go to the Amphoe to get the birth certificate.

Go to the Thai ministry of foreign affairs at Chaeng Wattana road in Bangkok, Here they have an translation office too (1 floor up), takes about an hour if they don't make mistakes. Check the translation if they spelled the name the same as in her passport (best to show them before they start translating).

With these papers go an other floor up and get the original and the translation legalized.

After you get that sorted go to your embassy and get the original and the translation legalized here too.

I don't know if there is any truth in this but I was under the impression a Birth Certificate and marriage certificate cannot be replaced and only a letter saying you have lost it can be issued.

The government keeps a 'master' with all the relevant details of which your certificate is the copy.

Depending on how old (or lucky) you are, your master copy may be rotting in a cabinet somewhere, safely archived in a cabinet somewhere, archived on microfilm at the Ministry of Interior in Bangkok, or fully digitized and accessible from any authorized computer terminal in the country.
