Urgent call for O-negative blood to save Norwegian man
Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: -- The Phuket Regional Blood Center is calling for urgent donations of O-negative blood in order to save the life of a Norwegian man in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Bangkok Hospital Phuket.

“The hospital said they need three units of O-negative to save the patient’s life,” PRBC Chief Pornthip Rattajak told the Phuket Gazette this afternoon.

“We have none of this blood in stock.”

The man, 37, is suffering from anemia, Ms Pornthip explained, but added she knew no further details about the man or what had caused him to be admitted to Bangkok Hospital’s ICU.

Donors are asked to call the PRBC at 076-251178 ext 2.

Ms Pornthip urged people of all blood types to step up and donate.

“Besides O-negative blood, we need to replenish our stocks of all blood types, Rh-positive and Rh-negative,” she said.

“We are running out of stock.”

If they were not so fussy I would donate on a regular bias as I did back in England but English blood is not good enough for them.

O negative is the blood to have. The only problem if your 0 negative that's the only blood you can have. For anyone else they can receive 0 negative blood, lucky for them.

If they were not so fussy I would donate on a regular bias as I did back in England but English blood is not good enough for them.

What are you talking about? Blood is blood type is not based on Natioality or even race. An African, Brit, or Asian person could have the same blood type. O type is simply called the universal donor as persons with A,B, or AB positive/negative can receive O blood if their type is not available. O type can only receive O type blood.

The only requirement in giving blood is that it is disease free and if you having been engaging in primiscous sex with prostitutes or are drug user you will be banned from giving blood in USA and probably Thailand.

PRBC will not accept donations from those who: lived in the UK between 1980 and 1996 for a period of six months or more, or have had sexual contact with the same gender.

Why tourists may not donate

Despite the fact that foreigners are much more likely than Thais to have Rh-negative blood, the rules of the Thai Red Cross do not allow the PRBC to accept donations from tourists, Ms Pornthip said.

One reason is that travel increases the risk of exposure to disease.

A second reason is that those who donate blood must have a permanent address in Phuket.

In rare cases, perhaps under emergency circumstances or if a family member of a tourist recipient is here with them and wishes to donate, the doctor may consider accepting their blood.

However, the PRBC does accept expatriate donors, but the expat must have lived here for six months before donating.

????? I donate my A- at Banglamung every three months when I am here and as I do not live in a "dengue" area as defined by UK NHS I can now and do donate every three months when in UK. generally return to UK late April, donate first week in May and August, return here mid August and donate first week in November and February. Never had any issues giving in Thailand although I did at first try the Pattaya International Hospitals who weren't interested. Later however at Pattaya Expats Club when getting a blood sugar test, the nurse got very excited about me being an A- and took details "in case of an emergency with a farlang.
