First rally leader arrested

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Sonthiyarn Chuenruethai-naitham, owner and director of T news agency, on Monday became the first anti-government rally leader to be arrested. He was walking in the Central Lat Phrao shopping complex when he was stopped by police.

Sonthiyarn, a former leader of now-defunct yellow-shirt movement, was charged with sedition and escorted to the Border Patrol Police Region 1 in Pathum Thani province where he will be detained.

Arrest warrants have been issued for many rally leaders, including Suthep Thaugsuban, secretary general of People's Democratic Reform Committee, for their involvement in the rallies but Sonthiyarn is the first to be actually arrested.

Earlier Chalerm Yoobamrung, director of the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order, said Sonthiyarn was the only wanted leader who was residing in a condominium. The 18 other leaders are being shielded by taking refuge in the protest sites.

Other "stars" of the rally are also facing arrest, Chalerm said. "I want to tell Mr Suthep that I will no longer tolerate what he has done, laying siege to many government offices and chasing away officials who wanted to work. That's beyond acceptable and I will use the law to handle the situation," he said.

Sonthiyarn to face seven-day detention prior to court order: Tarit

BANGKOK: -- Sonthiyarn Chuenruethai-naitham, a protest leader, will be detained at the Border Patrol Police Region 1 in Pathum Thani for seven days before a court order will be sought to extend his detention, the Department of Special Investigation chief said.

Tarit said after Sonthiyarn is detained for seven days, a court order will be sought for extending his detention by 30 more days.

After the 30-day period, he will be detained under the provision of emergency decree, Tarit added. He said Sonthiyarn was arrested for having violated the emergency decree.

Surely not all the Puea Thai politicians are that bad, surely?

Police are really making inroads now arn't they, much to the disgust of the PDRC fan base

They just picking them up when they stray from the flock!!! Best tactic and it has avoided clashing by going in with a hit team.

This is who they'll get them all. and they'll all be much more wary now :)

Be interesting to see if the Courts just let them go, as you do for insurection, trhying to overthrow democracy and blocking streets in a Capital City.

Good they whisked him out the capital as well. The mob won't be marching around there in a red shirt area. Not now they down to their last 100 or 200!!

Now we shall come to dread the knock on the door in the night

This action may well be the opening of the can of worms that will lead to blood on the streets.

Democracy is being sacrificed on the Shinwatra high altar

He was arrested, so he can keep company to all the red shirt leaders arrested before.coffee1.gif

Great news. I bet the others are less cocky now. I have a bottle of champagne waiting for the day I see Suthep in leg shackles.

Yeah right! Took them long enough to grab one insignificant guy who let down his guard. I expect they are waterboarding him at this moment.

One wonders at this point whether he will emerge in a police-sanctioned reenactment of his arrest, where he poses in the act of shopping, doubtless being instructed to look as sinister at it as possible. Notwithstanding, the emergency decree appears to be a rousing success. One can almost feel the opposition to Yingluck's administration crumble from one end of the country to the other.

Would the courts let them go after what happened with the Chinaman?

No need for any knocks on a door, they nabbed him in a shopping centre and that's the way its going to be. I can just see it now "top PDRC leader collared in a 7/11"

Excitable chap mr pipkins! Too many B Movies would be my assumption having read your posts these last few days. Where will you go once all of this is over and there is a new order? Will you suspend your account and come back in a different guise?

As it was only on Thai TV and media you'll have missed that they picked up quite a few guns last week!!! And the warrants for the 6 Soldiers in the Kwanchai shooting.

They getting them, and they know how to be patient..

Suthep will have to hope for his blood on the streets another day. Lets hope his fellow BKKians don't tire of him first and make his the next drop. Mussollini finished his days at the hands of his own "supporters"

If Rich Teacher lives in Thailand, it does have something to do with him. This is his country of choice, and its future is something he should be allowed to comment on in this forum.

Why do they need the detention? Surely that's for obtaining evidence. They should have that already .... so he should be in court in 7 days, No?

He will remain in prison for as long as the protests last, because that is the time the emergency decree will last. If you hold a city hostage for months, damage state property, order armed militias to shoot at civilians and financially damage millions of businesses in Bangkok and around the country, don't expect to just sit in a cell for 7 days and then walk free.

Son nam na.

Fantastic performance by the RTP. One every 4 months so should be just about complete in 15 years by which time Thaksin will be buried somewhere in the desert and Yingluck will be a wrinkly old granny. Oh, and Suthep's smile will be devoid of teeth!!
