I have to drive past Ubon Ratchathani to pha tam national park along route 217 towards chong mek.

It looks like half way along near Philbun mangsahan I might be able to change to route 2222 towards Khong chiam. Is this correct?

Yes that is possible but stay on 217 till after the dam then turn north on 2173 is quicker.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. I have driven both ways quite a few times and the road either way is good, so no difference. When I have visitors I go to Khong Chiam/Pha Taem via Phibun and then 2222 and then on the return trip go the alternate way and visit the gardens at Sirindorn Dam. Something different.
