BANGKOK: -- The European Union (EU) has joined other international bodies in expressing deep concern at the recent political violence in Thailand, saying the death of young children is particularly disturbing.

Catherine Ashton, the EU's High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, expressed her deepest sympathy to the families of the victims, her spokesman said Thursday.

"The High Representative is deeply concerned about the recent serious incidents of political violence in Thailand. The death of young children is particularly disturbing. The High Representative expresses her deepest sympathy to the families of the victims."

She called on all stakeholders in Thailand to act with the utmost restraint to prevent any further violence. "She reiterates her urgent call for a dialogue leading to a lasting political solution based on democratic principles."

To put it bluntly, I doubt any of the 'stakeholders' in Thailand give a toss what she or the EU have to say. Not until their opinion has any effect on their purses or other personal real world repercussion.

I think that is stretching it a little. Yingluck might be in Chiangmai, but in reality, Thailand is about story 250 in any newspaper at the moment. Everyone is scratching their heads wondering "how stupid are these people that they can't understand democracy?"

Maybe the EU can take this opportunity to tell Mr. Suthep that children should not be used as human shields for his own protection.

When Suthep sees children besides or near him, he should tell them to go home. No excuses.

Chiang Mai is Thailand the last time I checked, or does it end at the outskirts of Bangkok for you? And irrigation problems affecting farmers are also the responsibility of the caretaker PM.

The long overdue payments to farmers for rice pledged under the PTP's rice pledging scheme is also the responsibility of the caretaker prime minister.
