Concerns About Stray Dogs in Cha Am Now on the Local Govt Radar

Cha Am:-- The issue of stray dogs is a frequently discussed concern to residents and visitors to Cha-Am. Injury because of motorcycle accidents caused by roaming dogs and dog bites requiring rabies treatment are considered by many to be in urgent need of attention.

On 19th February, as the result of an approach to the Cha-Am Municipality, a public meeting was held between concerned local foreigners and representatives of the Municipality. Aver 50 people attended, a figure which may be regarded as high considering the short notice and lack of publicity about this meeting.

A variety of issues were discussed including the dangers and risks to both Thai and foreign people in town and the serious injuries and need for medical treatment directly attributable to the issue. Concern about the welfare of injured or diseased dogs was expressed. The impact on tourism, particularly the loss of return visitors, was also highlighted.

It was acknowledged that Resorts and Hotels have also approached the municipality concerned about the impact of stray dogs on the businesses, however without offering funding. Tourism budgets have also not included funding for this issue. The municipality acknowledged the seriousness of the problem and agreed that ‘something must be done’.

The Cha-Am Municipality representatives agreed to meet further with several of those attending. The aim and commitment given by the municipality was to arrange a forum in about a month’s time when a strategy and plans to address the problem can be offered. In addition an immediate approach will be made to the Department of Livestock to remove about 100 of the most aggressive dogs.

It is understood that this the first time such a local government plan is to be developed. This was regarded by those attending as a very positive step towards a long term solution.
