CHIANG RAI: -- A clash between border patrol police and a drug-smuggling gang in Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district on Friday night resulted the death of six suspects and the seizure of 840,000 yaba pills, an informed source said yesterday.

One suspect was injured.

The incident occurred in a wooded area between Ban Pha Mhee-Ban Tham Luang.

Responding police did not access the remote area until about 5am yesterday.

A .38-calibre gun and a handmade shotgun were also seized.

Chiang Rai police chief Maj-General Wanchai Suwansirikhet and other senior police inspected the scene at about 10am.

Meanwhile, Provincial Police Region 8 chief Lt-General Panya Mamen announced a drug bust in Krabi's Koh Lanta in which four suspects were arrested.

Police seized 7,800 yaba pills, 372.95 grams of crystal meth, Bt65,700 cash, five bank account books that showed sums of about Bt500,000 and six CCTV cameras.

Six drug suspects killed in Thailand

CHIANG RAI: Six suspected drug dealers were shot dead during a firefight with Thai security forces who seized illegal amphetamines at the scene, police said Saturday.

The clash occurred late Friday evening in a mountainous border area in the Mae Sai district of northernmost Chiang Rai province -- part of the Golden Triangle region.

"Six bodies were found at clash site along with seven bags of methamphetamines," Colonel Nattawut Yuwan, commander of the Mae Sai police, told AFP by telephone.

"We suspect they were hilltribe (Muser) people," he said, adding the suspects had been travelling by foot and the clash happened quite close to the border with Myanmar.

There were no reports of any casualties among security forces.

Clashes between police and drug traffickers are fairly common in Thailand's remote border regions.

Thailand has seen a marked increase in seizures of methamphetamine -- which is relatively cheap and easy to make -- often smuggled from neighbouring Myanmar where armed rebels use profits from narcotics to fund their operations.

Shoot the lot of those drug mules. The misery they bring upon others is senseless so they deserve a bullet. Cheaper than a court room of paid lawyers getting them off on corruption money so they can do it all again.

Why? as the special forces would say: if you fly with the crows you get shot with the crows.

Taking it they had a sign at least a couple of them were armed the police would have no way of telling how meany weapons they had............best policy in a case like that is shoot and and ask questions later

I think most of us would rather see drug dealers, who care nothing about how many lives they ruin, topped than risk the life of one policeman.

Perhaps they should aim a bit higher up in the scheme of things. Suppose it's best not to start killing those who really are behind it though.

So at least 4 were unarmed, no doubt the Thai security forces done up like Tom Clancy Special Ops are feeling an inch longer tonight haven taken down and executed a handful of unarmed peasant hilltribe kids.

Yea, they should just be happy making a dollar a day, enough for a days rice meal. And don't send anyone to school, they could not afford to eat then.

Who are you to say what anyone deserves? They may have well been local village folk forced into carrying them stuff with threat of death to their family.

Instead of thinking about what " may have well been" concentrate on what they WERE. Armed foreign nationals illegally crossing the border carrying narcotics.

For whatever reason they chose to participate, that is a very high risk activity (QED). That high risk has just been made very clear to the next group considering it.

OK. So a whole load of drugs have been removed from circulation and half a dozen mules killed. They are but the tip of the iceberg. I, for one, would like it if some had lived to inform on the ringleaders, financiers and distribution network. I appreciate that the carriers would not necessarily know much but they must have had a contact or two.

I just find it to be a little too close to Thaksin's war on drugs where suspects were routinely shot and killed and there were no trials.

Actually any proper border police would be trained to not fire on those that aren't visibly in possession of weapon, even then they would need to raise the weapon before it is okay to shoot.
