Tourism Min backs revocation of emergency law

BANGKOK, 11 March 2014 (NNT) – The Tourism and Sports Minister has voiced his support for the withdrawal of the Emergency Decree, saying it would be good for the country’s tourism industry.

Mr. Somsak Pureesrisak, Minister for Tourism and Sports, said if the government decided to lift the emergency law, Thailand would see a higher number of tourists from Japan, Hong Kong, and African countries. S

ome of these countries have recently been battered by heavy snow storms. If greater Bangkok remained under a state of emergency, it would lose an abundance of opportunities, he added.

According to the minister, Thailand in 2013 saw more than 70,000 tourists per day, but since the anti-government protests escalated, the number has fallen to 45,000 tourists per day visiting the country, causing Thailand to lose income from the tourism sector.

The SOE doesn't scare the tourists.

It's the grenades thrown at the protesters that's scaring them.

Step down Yingluck and let tranquillity come back to the streets of Bangkok and the tourists will be pouring in again.

Don't know about the quality.....but this is another subject.

Please wake up, It is only the protests that scaring the tourist.

Since the first minute the protest started the number of tourist went down, we, you and everybody knows that, but because your love for Suthep makes you blind, you have to blame the government.

I am not pro government, but blaming them for this is really short sighted .

So when tourism is high we are always told that it is an insignificant factor in Thailand's economy and they don't need tourists, but when tourism suffers it's all of a sudden important again and the economy takes a dive.

From 70,000 per day to 45,000 a day. last year and now.

Of the 45,000 a day now 15,000 a day will be visa runs--and other really NON tourist customers it always relates to. I would estimate at least 1,000 a day on visa runs alone and this is at Nong Khai---only one point of entry.

The mind boggles at the numbers Nationwide.

When there is an emergency decree, some Countries automatically issue tourism warnings. In most places, this will void the travel insurance of people who choose to go anyways. Once the emergency decree is lifted, there will definitely be more tourists.

As far as the demonstrations go, as long as they were peaceful, they didn't really have a negative impact, but as soon as (most likely) pro-government elements started to bomb and shoot, that changed quickly and travel more warnings were issued by a lot of Countries, too. The Emergency Decree put the final nail in the Tourism coffin.

Then there was the violent demonstrations by the Reds, in 2012 and a few years earlier, the Government crackdown on peaceful PAD protesters, which of course overshadowed any future demonstrations, weather peaceful or not. So yes, I guess the point could be argued, that the original, peaceful, anti-government demonstrations against the Amnesty Law, etc. might have a bit of a negative influence on tourism, but only because of past, bad example by the Thaskin puppet Governments and the red hordes, threatening to burn down Bangkok.

Now, that the "Red Hordes" are gathering again, they are talking about lifting the Emergency Decree...what a joke. Politics and power struggles in this Nation are so transparent, but yet, the gullible public eats it all up, just like their favorite soap.

Anyways, this will soon be small potatoes, compared to the tourists they will loose, when some of the true numbers of the Swine Flu (H1N1) numbers start to come out. That seems to be the biggest coverup right now, trying to protect tourism. So far they admitted to it being active in 5 Provinces between Chiang Mai and Rayong and admitted to over 11000 infected and less than 10 dead. Well the number is bigger in Chiang Mai Province alone. Go to McCormick Hospital and ask how many people have been treated for H1N1, in the past month and how many have died from it? Anyways, it may be a little off-topic, but is is concerning tourist numbers and the Government having it's head up it's you-know-what wai2.gif

Tourism hails plan to lift state of emergency

BANGKOK: -- Plan to lift the state of emergency raises hope of tourism recovery with the caretaker tourism minister voicing full support and the return of tourists to the country.

Caretaker Tourism Minister Somsak Pureesrisak said on Tuesday that he supported lifting the state of emergency which has been introduced to cope with anti government demonstrations.

He recalled that the two-month state of emergency imposed in Bangkok and some parts of its adjacent provinces which is due to expire March 23 has badly tarnished the tourism industry.

He said the number of arrivals was at 45,000 persons per day, down from 70,000 persons year-on-year.

Lifting the special law will be good for Thailand’s tourism, said the minister, particularly during this high season period when tourists usually avoid other countries which are facing turbulent weather.

BANGKOK, March 11 - Caretaker Tourism Minister Somsak Pureesrisak said on Tuesday that he supports lifting of an emergency decree which has been enforced to handle with the anti-government demonstrations following a sharp drop in foreign arrivals.

The caretaker minister commented as the government is considering lifting the two-month state of emergency imposed in Bangkok and some parts of its adjacent provinces which is due to expire March 23.

He said, during the past two months, the number of arrivals was at 45,000 persons per day, down from 70,000 persons year-on-year.

Lifting the special law will be good for Thailand's tourism, said the minister. The country should benefit from this high season period when tourists usually avoid other countries which are facing turbulent weather.

Regarding reports on imposters travelling with the missing Malaysia Airlines jet found to have used passports stolen in Thailand during motorbike rentals, the minister said that the using passports as a deposit for the rental is unlawful and the copies of the documents should be sufficient.

Earlier Italian national Luigi Maraldi, whose name appeared on the MH370 flight, met with Thai police yesterday. He said that his passport was stolen when he left it as a deposit guarantee at a motorcycle rental company in Phuket.

Mr Somsak said he discussed with caretaker Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt on the issue which he said must be addressed. (MCOT online news)

No it is the protestors who have not had any proof of doing what you say. In other words you're posting a rumour.

There is no good reason for continuing the SOE which had not reduced the grenades, warning shots and other minor skirmishes directed at the protestors. All it's done is increased the charges and warrants against (only?) the protestors which is about the sum of Chalerm's big-mouthed efforts.

It also does have an effect on reducing the numbers of Asian tourists who are warned off by their governments because of the SOE.

Mr Somsak is not a PTP member but a Chart Pattana party member.

I didn't say any such thing. What I said is that you are spreading rumours as no proof has (yet) emerged of who threw or fired the grenade,

You are not pro government? So let me guess you are neutral and can see every action by all sides with an independent clear objective mind. Well I would never call anyone a liar but I don't believe you.

No, I am not pro this government, but also not anti .

No, I am not 100% neutral and clear objective .

But I state that blaming the government that the amount of tourist goes down is short sighted , because we all know it is due to the protests and nothing else.

You say you don't believe me, fair enough.

Yes because the police have only managed to find evidence of crimes against Red shirts. For some reason ( TS/PT) the police have been unable to find a single perpetrator of crimes against PDRC, NACC, hospitals, private homes, judges or the courts or even whistle blowers, but are happy to lssue charges against the opposition made by taxi drivers and UDD members with no evidence other than some fictional story
