BANGKOK, March 12 – The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), Thailand's red shirt movement, has announced its plan to hold a major rally in central Ayutthaya province Saturday to show support for the elected government.

UDD leader Thida Thavornseth briefed the press about the rally, emphasising that the movement will continue to fight for democracy and show that they oppose a military coup. Mrs Thida said that supporters are people striving to protect democracy, but lately there have been attempts to counter the UDD’s political legitimacy.

In response to an earlier PDRC statement, Mrs Thida called on the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) to present a clearer reform process for the country.

She said that the UDD rejected PDRC's demand for a neutral prime minister and said that the PDRC should also clarify how the country would be after reforms.

UDD spokesperson Thanawut Wichaidith meanwhile dismissed the PDRC allegation of people being recruited for armed struggle, claiming that all UDD supporters would witness peacefully for democracy.

Mr Thanawat urged UDD supporters from across the country to meet in Ayutthaya province this Saturday.

Some supporters will also travel by boat from other provinces to join the Ayutthaya rally, he said.

The spokesperson said the rally is planned in Ayutthaya to avoid clashes with PDRC protesters in the capital. The movement on Saturday only aims to warn the PDRC not to destroy democracy. He claimed that the PDRC reform plans would only serve the elites.

Mr Thanawut then called on PDRC leader Suthep Thaugsuban to stop using a statement: “Overthrowing the Thaksin Regime” as it implies that the PDRC are also against UDD supporters who back Mr Thaksin.

UDD leader Worachai Hema, meanwhile, stressed that using weapons cannot bring victory to the people, while another leader, Korkaew Pikulthong, said the PDRC statement on Monday was a disappointment as it mentioned nothing clearly about the reform.

Mr Korkaew asked the PDRC to begin reforming itself first as it is what society wants to see most.

Another UDD leader, Weng Tojirakan echoed the sentiment, saying that UDD always supports the country's reforms, but not reforms led by Mr Suthep. (MCOT online news)

---------------

So the UDD is backtracking from earlier pronouncements claiming they were an independent movement and their disingenuous claims of being independent of the Thaksin association.

Everyone has a right to hold a rally lets just hope it doesn't go on for months like some others have been doing.

2010 was short compared to 2013/14.

2010 was a different time and the demo was crushed by the government who said people don't have a right to block streets or occupy government buildings. People now have more rights to block streets and occupy buildings.

I think at the time, the government said that the protesters don't have the right to shoot guns and grenades from their protest sites.

and the government is saying the same thing this year also

More importantly, let's hope they don't burn down Ayutthaya when things don't go their way.

We don't want a repeat of 2010.

wait till next week....

you mean the "peaceful democratic" redshirts in 2010 ?

No I don't mean 2010. I am talking about now and not reliving history. Why stop at 2010, why not go back further to 1750

Seems Thida finally got Thaksin to open his wallet. Those "mass"rallies getting more frequent and the amount of idiocy spilled from the stage have expanded exponentially.

It has been spilling from various platforms since November last year.

They learnt that through experience.

It's a shame that you miss the point about the present day incumbents of Lumpini Park in your haste to drag up events of 4 years ago.

Have you forgotten already?

The government cracked down because they were storming hospitals, burning down buildings, looting businesses, shooting at the army and hurling grenades at then killing soldiers, and the whole so called 'rally' was nothing more than a riot with wanton destruction on their minds.

Then add to that the fact that grenades and bullets where flying OUT of their camps as opposed to bullets and grenades firing INTO the PDRC camps, camps of people who are not destroying and burning BKK or actively attacking the army.

So can you now see the difference???

So stop trying to compare 2010 with the current situation, it isn't even in the same ballpark. Had the reds been doing the same in 2010 as the PDRC protesters are doing now.... 90 people will probably still be alive. They brought it on themselves for what they were doing in their 'burn Bangkok' campaign.

You might want to check your timelines as well as your facts in that rant.

Those red shirt rallies more and more look like Country and Western parties. Might get busy as they have a few thousand farmers staying in nearby Bangkok, for some strange reasons as they don't grow rice there, who are maybe looking for some night out during the weekend.
