Mae Sai best for visa run?

Featured Replies

Just got my double entry tourist visa ( arrived Chiang Mai 20th Jan 2014 ) extended at the local immigration office till 19 th April. I am 53 years old and have a New Zealand passport. I want to stay in Chiang Mai till the 23rd of July 2014. The question is how would those in the know go about this with the minimal number of

runs possible. I really don't want lots of trips to Mae Sai if possible. Or can I just go to the local immigration and get one month extensions till I leave in 4 months. Advice much appreciated. Great forum to.

Check the "enter by date" on the visa your second entry must be activated on or before that date.

You will need to leave the country when your current "permission to stay" is close to expiry either to activate the second visa entry or to obtain another tourist visa.

The 30 day "extensions" from immigration are only available once per Tourist Visa entry.

As a New Zealander you will only receive 15 days visa exempt entry by crossing the border and returning without a visa

You still have one more entry that you can extend for 30 days. They will take you to July by just dong one border run.

The only thing you to check is that you do the 2nd entry before the enter before date on your visa sticker.

You can only get one 30 day extension per 60 day entry.

You may need to do one border run for a 15 day entry in July to get you to the 23rd.

So now that I've studied this a bit more my course of action is

1. go to Mae Sai on the 18th April (the 19 th is a Saturday), get the 15 day re entry that takes me up to the 2 nd of May.

2. On the 2nd of May get a 2 month extension from Chiang Mai immigration. That takes me up to the 1st of July, and another trip to Mae Sai would only extend to the 16 th July, not the 23rd. Clearly I'm missing something!

My double entry tourist visa issued in London on the 24 th Dec 2013 just says June for the " enter before " bit.

Thanks in advance.

Wait you do seem to be missing something !

When you entered Thailand the first of a permitted two entries was used. You then got a 30 day extension.

There is still one more entry from the visa to use. You need to cross the border and return and you will get 60 days which can be extended for a further 30 days !

It is only when you reach the end of that 90 days that you will need to seek a 15 day entry.

You cannot get a 2 month extension from immigration !

1. You will get 60 days when you enter not 15 days because you will be using the 2nd entry of you visa.

2. You would get a 30 day extension at immigration before your 60 days run out.

That gets you to somewhere around the 15th of July.

Your enter before date is not a problem because is is well after the 18th of April.
