Good Thai films

I'd recommend the work of director Apichatpong Weerasethakul. His films include Blissfully Yours, Tropical Malady, Syndromes and a Century, and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. Uncle Boonmee became the first Thai film to win the Palm d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010.

His films aren't exactly mainstream and won't be to everyone's tastes, but I find them to be some of the most beautiful, mysterious and pleasurable I've ever seen.

Last Life in the Universe by Pen-Ek Ratanaruang is a pretty good romance film. Ong-Bak and Tom-Yum-Goong are great for mindless action fun. Pee Mak is quite a funny comedy horror film.

I really want to see a recent picture called Shakespeare Must Die about the problems faced by a Thai theatre company attempting to stage a politically charged and controversial production of Macbeth. Ironically, that film is currently banned here.
