NIDA Poll says majority wants reform ahead of election

BANGKOK: -- NIDA Poll, the polling research center of the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), says the majority of people it asked have suggested that national reform should be implemented first before election is to be held.

In the latest poll conducted from a total of 1,255 people at all levels of education during March 24-25, they were asked what should come first – between general election and national reform – after the Constitutional Court nullified the February 2 general election.

It said the answer was that 52.51% wanted to see national reform first, while 38.25% wanted election as soon as possible before reform should take place.

Only 3.19% of people wanted both to begin simultaneously, and 6.05% were uncertain.

Asked again of a possibility that the next general election will be nullified if the caretaker government and the Election Commission decided to go ahead with the general election ahead of the reform, 72.04% said it is strongly possible that it will be nullified under the current political impasse and turmoil.

They also expected of troubles and protest to obstruct the election.

But 14.01% said it was impossible to repeat the same incident in which election is nullified as there is a lesson to learn from the failed election, while 13.86% gave no comment as they were uncertain, NIDA Poll says.

It's good that this poll indicates the people have had enough of the politicians lying and cheating and serving their own ends which has always been there but has now reached new levels under this government.

Now we need two things to happen. Suthep has to outline exactly what these reforms should be and Yingluck should present her party's plans and both should be debated in an open public forum.

If she is worthy of being PM she should at least be able to do this.

But she is NOT capable of an open and contradictory public debate. Dot.

Well in that case she shouldn't be the country's prime minister.

You wouldn't want a pilot who didn't know how to fly a plane.

This must be a red orientated poll.

Going by the last failed election more than 52% clearly showed they wanted reform before elections. Only 30% of the population had presented eligible votes giving PTP only 8 million votes. Taking into account the terrorist wing of the PTP themselves say they garner support from 10's of millions, it puts this 8 million into context and makes it stand out as much as a terrorist beating a monk up simply for trying to stop a violent incident.

Of course this 30% result offered no surprises and was in sync with their failed policies and corruptive abuse of power. If ones drug of choice is surprises though they will be able to "itch that scratch" when reading these polls. They certainly are very biased towards the red side of the equation.

To think otherwise is an inability to accept facts coupled with an addictive and compulsive use of "beliefs" to quell the voice of the majority (see the below post from MaxLee as point in case). The characteristics of which are quite akin actually to what the PTP had done the instant they won the last election.

That's what the majority wants.........that's what will be done.thumbsup.gif

Really, over 50 %,... with just a minority in Bangkok and an 80% popularity of existing redshirts and Thaksin supporters, nationwide EXCLUDING the rice farmers....

That doesn't makes sense cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Still putting the same spin on everything Jamie?

52% didn't state they wanted reforms did they, you're still interpreting a non vote as a NO vote, many didn't vote as they knew it was a waste of time as the non participation of the Dems meant the election was almost certain to be voided.

How about the results of the election, in those that did cast their votes, would you be so kind as to remind us all who had the MAJORITY please?

I'll be more swayed by all your spin, IF Suthep was to stop being a dick, and prove to the country that he's infact correct and the majority want reforms, but he won't because bottom line, this majority you and he keep harping on about is just in your heads, and come the day of the vote, you'd be sent back to rethink where did it all go wrong..

Let the people decide, quit blocking polls and intimidating protesters, either put up or shut up, and if it's a majority that votes against the PTP, then you get your wishes.. but stop this crap that the majority want, when you stopped people from voting !!!!

The big stumbling block is the PTP they can not be trusted, although Suthep has now made he's bed , he must lie in it, so the first thing PTP will do if they win an election , will be gunning for all the protest leaders, DSI will have a field day, Suthep now has no choice but to take the hard line he is taking. Reform first.

The results of this poll are striking, and if succeeding polls confirm this trend, then this will be something that Pheu Thai will be increasingly unable to ignore. 52 % wanting reform before election is a pretty clear result for any poll. And 72 % fearing another election would simply replicate the experience of the last one is an even clearer result. These public views should not surprise. Abhisit's suggestion of a referendum asking the public to provide a green light on reform discussions would likely be welcomed by the public. If this poll is any indication, it would pass.

Why should the public fear another poll? Who told them to be scared?

Fully agree, now put the poll out to the whole country in the form of a referendum, and when the results come back, act on them, over 50% then Start the reforms. wink.png

Fat Haggis---Fat Chance. I'll go along with reforms first, the type that benefit the whole population. Then go for it. Free and fair elections (as long as in the reform it is written any poll irregularities)---JAIL no questions asked.wink.png

No one had a majority in the recent election. 20 million people voted. PTP got 8 million votes.

NIDA is well-know as a yellow agency. Nothing to see here

The PTP is well-known as a Dubai (or Montenegro?) agency.

Nobody is disputing that reforms are needed, it's how they're implemented and by whom.

These reforms have to be accepted by everyone, but considering that both sides right now can't accept the laws and the constitution and are all about me me me me me, then you're never going to be able to get the country united.

Referendum before reform

That will gauge the atmospherics for the future.

Another one of these by guns are polls.

How do they do it. Yesterday sukhumband failed because he wasn't outstanding, today 52% want reform, when Suthep hasn't even told the people exactly what his reform is yet.

1st question should be

Do you really understand what the proposed reforms are?

What percentage do?

5?, 10?

No one has a clue what these reforms are, so how can anyone support them?
