Locals Killing Birds

Featured Replies

We have men in the community going around the area with sling shots shooting birds for eating and now I've noticed hardly many left and quite annoyed as I enjoyed the singing of all the diffrent variety of beautiful birds ( not pigeons ) in the morning with coffee . My wife seems to think they are from up country and spent all their money and need food.

We recently just come back from Loei and stayed at a resort in the mountains and also noticed no birds at all and asked the staff and told us the locals shoot them and eat them.

Thai people enjoy many wild creatures, its been their way for many many years in rural areas.

Snakes, birds, frogs, and many more, its a natural way of rural life.

Bird hunting either using catapults, mist nets or home-made rifles remains popular with people from Isaan, Laos and northern hill tribes. In the other areas of Thailand it is far less prevalent and is often just kids amusing themselves killing birds with catties. However since most areas of Thailand are full of migrant workers from Isaan, you will see it everywhere.

If they are doing it in National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Non-Hunting Areas, Forest Parks or any other area where flora and fauna is protected by statute, it is illegal. Tell the rangers and it might have some effect. There are also certain species that cannot be hunted anywhere.
