webfact Posted April 17, 2014 Share Posted April 17, 2014 Police arrest 56 youths, impound 47 motorcyclesThe NationBANGKOK: -- Police yesterday morning arrested 56 youths and impounded 47 motorcycles for illegally racing on Kanchanapisek road in Bangkok's Bang Bon district.Following complaints by local residents that street racers caused a public nuisance and blocked traffic in the area, police carried out a 45-strong police operation at 2.30 to round up street racers.Of the 56 youths (44 males and 12 females) arrested, 24 of them - 21 boys and three girls - were under 18 years old.They would be facing a charge of reckless motorcycle riding with disregard to others' safety, which was punishable for up to a three-month imprisonment and/or a fine ranged from Bt2,000 to Bt10,0000.The youths over 18 years old were sent to the Thon Buri Criminal Court, while those under 18 were sent to the Juvenile Court.In this operation, two policemen - Pol Sr Sgt-Major Jakrapong Pinjai and Pol Sr Sgt-Major Thanapol Thongruang - were slightly injured after being hit with fleeing motorcycles.-- The Nation 2014-04-17 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Unless there is a sea-change in society culture this scenario will happen time and time again. The show and tell is a standard placebo by those in power to placate the uneducated. Fine is minimum Baht 10K or thirty days in jail; impound the bikes with a Baht 20K impound fee. If impound fee is not paid within thirty days auction the bikes off to highest bidder. I remember arriving back on the western outer ring road (Kanchanaphisek road) near Bang Khae from Kanchanaburi's Sangkhlaburi district around midnight about 2 years ago and there were dozens of these racers driving the WRONG WAY down Kanchanaphisek road! I exited for the frontage road and then stopped at McDonald's for a meal, watching the idiots risk their lives from the safety of the inside of the store. I hope more arrests like these are made, but it would be good if police also started impounding motorcycles of riders caught not wearing helmets, speeding etc. who are unable to pay their fines. If the Vietnamese police can do that, then why not the Thai police?
