BANGKOK: -- Mass-circulation Daily News newspapers head office on Vibhavadee Rangsit and the Administrative Court on Chaengwattana road were attacked last night with M 79 grenades in two separate incidents last night.

Nobody was hurt in the two attacks but some properties of the papers were damaged.

It was not immediately known the motive of the attack on Daily News newspapers office but some columnists of the daily are strong critics of the caretaker government.

Plainclothes soldiers from the First Army Region arrived at the newspapers this morning to inspect the scene.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) police are also on the way to inspect the scene along with Bang Khen police.

Meanwhile the Administrative Court on Chaengwsttana road was also hit by a M 79 grenade last night but nobody was injured.

The court is near where anti government protesters led by Luang Poo Buddha-issara were camping out to wage anti government campaign for months.

It was not immediately known if the perpetrator intended to fire at the court or at the protesters.
The grenade landed at Gate 2 of the Administrative Court at about 10.00 p.m.

Guards of the protesters rushed to Gate 2 upon the explosion was heard and they saw a bronze color pickup truck coming down the tollway in front of the CAT Telecom head office and quickly made a U-turn and sped.

Abbot Luang Poo Buddha-issara also inspected the scene last night with the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers to collect evidence.

Any country should be shocked and surprised to see their courts attacked in this way - it is a sign of just how bad things have got when we hardly register events such as this.

The Daily News has real contrasts, the columnist and editorial on page 3 frequently attack the government yet the main cartoon on page 8 has lampooned Apisit and/or Suthep daily almost without exception since 2010.

‘Dailynews’ and the Administrative Court attacked by M79

BANGKOK, 24 April 2014, (NNT) - An unknown number of assailants launched two M79 attacks last night on an office building belonging to local newspaper ‘Dailynews’ and the Administrative Court. No injuries or casualties have been reported.

According to the Metropolitan Police Bureau, one of the grenades was fired around 9 pm in the area between the newspaper editor’s office and the television editor’s office, the latter was currently undergoing a renovation. The bomb destroyed an air conditioner compressor but no one was injured in the attack.

Police investigators arrived shortly at the scene and discovered an M 79 shell near the site. Initially, based on the CCTV footage from the buildings, the cops speculated that the grenade had been fired from the toll way close by.

About an hour after the first incident, another M 79 attack was reported at the office of the Administrative Court on Chengwattana Road. The grenade exploded 150 meters away from the People’s Democratic Reform Committee's medical tent. There were no reports of injuries from this attack as well.

Military trucks ?

I don't suppose the BIB have thought of a police steakout around these places that are continually being attacked. Probably not as this would lead to them having to say who is responsible.

Daily News condemns grenade attack as an intimidation against press freedom

4-25-2014-11-02-04-AM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Daily News newspaper late Thursday night issued a statement condemning the grenade attack against its head office and urged the government, in particular the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO), to try to arrest the perpetrators as quick as possible.

It was believed that an M79 grenade was fired by assailants from the tollway at the head office of Daily News located on Vibhavadi Rangsit highway at about 8.30 p.m. The force from the grenade explosion damaged an airconditioner and punched a small hole on the concrete floor. There were no injuries however.

In the statement which was issued at about 11.30 pm. Daily News said that the grenade attack was an act of intimidation against press freedom which was meant to deprive the public of the right of access to information.

The newspaper pleaded with the perpetrators to understand the role of the media and to stop the violence. Nevertheless, it vowed to carry on its duty honestly and in compliance with the media’s code of conduct.

Daily News’ executive editor Dr Prapai Hetrakul Srinuannat, meanwhile, appealed to the government to try to arrest the perpetrators. She said that this was not the first time that the newspaper was attacked. She disclosed that on January 30, 2007, two M79 grenades were fired at its head office and, so far, no one has been arrested.

She thanked the police and the police explosive ordnance disposal unit for their quick response to the incident.

It kinda works in a dual purpose like this... fire a grenade today and everyone forgets about the grenade that was fired yesterday. It eats up headlines and distracts from the real issues, and it attempts to intimidate the courts.

I was at the medical tent on Changwattana Road last week. It's not a tent... it's a bunker of sandbags and could easily withstand a direct grenade attack. Some of the guards there pointed to a certain building (hotel) where they thought the grenades were fired from. There really isn't a clean line of sight from there except to the most westerly part of the PDRC barricade which includes the medical tent.

It's more like a point and shoot in the general direction and hope we get lucky, and there were high winds in the area last night. I pity the air compressor.

Don't hold your breath.

You are not red shirts.... you are the target.

Try asking the military to do the investigation for you if you actually really want one.

These guys don't have any difficulty with procurement of M-79's or their grenades.

Ah good, an article that is four years old. That's useful. You were going to say that this is not a recent incident, I take it, just that you forgot? whistling.gif

It's an article pointing to the origin of grenades used by Red Shirts previously. If you want a more recent instance of people caught with the same ordnance:

Indeed, the long and consistent history of their association, up to the present, with their weapon of choice, is quite extensive

By Digital Content

BANGKOK, April 25 -- Two separate M-79 grenade attacks occurred last night at the Daily News newspaper on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road and the Administrative Court in Chaeng Wattana, but no injuries were reported.

At 9pm a grenade landed in the Daily News compound, between the offices of the newspaper and Daily News TV.

The explosion made a small hole in the ground and damaged an air conditioner compressor and a building pillar.

A witness said he heard an explosion and saw thick smoke. He first believed that the explosion has come from the aircon compressor but later learned that it was a bomb.

The CCTV footage captured the moment when the grenade exploded.

Police believed the assailants may have shot the grenade from behind the newspaper compound.

At around 10pm, an M-79 grenade was shot into the compound of the Administrative Court near the anti-government protester site in the Chaeng Wattana area.

It landed in a bush near the entrance gate.

The witnesses said they saw the grenade being fired from a pickup truck passing the CAT Telecom office. (MCOT online news)

In the other newspaper they quote an unnamed source as saying the new Bkk City police chief is someone ' trusted ' by Mr. T which is very reassuring for the maintenance of law and order without fear or favour.

A far cry of the Rambo stuff where a whole village goes up in flames from a single grenade. Probably the metal pellet type: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40mm_grenade#M79 , which means it's designed to shred people into pieces. Fired into an empty alley, this is just scare tactics. For now.

So designed to intimidate the way it was used - I suppose that if someone did get hurt or killed then I would only be an accident and aright?

The two targets for this "intimidation only grenade" courts and newspaper - hardly the sign of a health democracy, or groups within society committed to democracy!

Every time there is a grenade attack the sheeple blame the red-shirts.

"It must be true, I read it on the internet"

The "sheeple" maybe see not only a trend, but actual documented evidence to support that possibility.

Can you name one single instance of an M-79 grenade attack in the last few years that hasn't been against a group or organization that is not perceived by the Red Shirts as their opponents?
