Where to go for wireless router maintenance?

Featured Replies

I have a TP-WR842ND. I replaced the TP LInk firmware with DDWRT but it doesn't play well (see the long threads at the DDWRT support forum on this model). I'd like to revert to the original TPLInk firmware. Any suggestions on where I can take it to do this kind of job? It's not quite straightforward (ie., a simple firmware upgrade through the GUI won't get the job done). Need someone with some expertise and isn't going to charge more than it's worth.

Suggestions welcome.

Many thanks

You say a simple upgrade won't work. Did you mean a downgrade? Can you simply flash it with the earlier firmware?

I found what appears to be your original firmware that says you can use the web browser with it.

About 1/2 way down the page. Be sure to click on "skip ad." LINK

Good luck.

Re flash with the original firmware as NeverSure suggests, but with the cost of routers these days, and if your in any way technology 'challenged', just go and buy a new one

Why not just "reset" to factory defaults? Then try again.

TP link have a lifetime warantee. You could try their service centre. Give them an email at [email protected] and ask for the nearest one to you.

TP link have a lifetime warantee.

As the OP has violated the terms of that warranty by flashing 3rd party firmware TP-Link may refuse repair, charge for it or just go ahead and repair/replace it.

Sometimes these get bricked and need a JTAG access/repair.

Assuming you have V1 or V2 see "recovery" and/or "back to stock".

Yes, I have V1 but actually that process is a bit overhead my head (or at least I'm not ready to invest the time in reading up on what I don't already now) which is why I am looking to outsource this. Any suggestions for reliable and reasonable help? I don't mind running it down to Fortunetown. I have to head that way anyways...

Many thanks

Now I understand why you need a new router.wink.png

Well, perhaps. smile.png

I could still use some suggestion on where to bring the router for servicing. There's documentation on the recovery as lomatop points out (http://wiki.openwrt....link/tl-wr842nd); I just need to find someone who can read it and get it back to original firmware...

Maybe just bring it with you to Fortune Town, and ask around?

Make sure you tell them what you did, so they know what they are dealing with.

There are lots of repair shops in Phantip Plaza. Why not take your router there and ask around?

Really???? You want to repair a 1000 baht router?

Why not just upgrade and get a new one!

If it can be repaired or replaced for free under warranty then why not?

Then you always have a spare on hand if/when your new/current device fails.

Thanks to all that offered advice for this issue, especially the all-knowledgeable lomatopo...

Apparently the proper documentation is a bit elusive. While all roads seemed to point to a complicated "recovery" process, there is actually a "webrevert" file posted at the DD-WRT forum which can be used like a firmware upgrade. Simple. And Done. I'm back on the stock firmware. Just fired up this bad boy and it screams. Happy to keep around for a backup, but if anyone is interested I can cut them a deal since I already have a new one (E4200) coming over from the States...

Cheers

Where can you find this router for B1000 in Thailand?
