Lite Beer Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 EARTHQUAKEWarning devices to be installed at key sitesThe Nation BANGKOK: -- Devices capable of giving an early warning for earthquakes, fires and floods will be installed at major historic sites across the country within the next two years, Fine Arts Department director general Anek Sihamat said yesterday.Anek also said provincial FAD offices were working with local administrative bodies and the National Office of Buddhism to work out a national plan to minimise earthquake damage to historic sites and facilitate easier post-quake repairs. The Office of Buddhism and administrative bodies should give money to the scheme and provide equipment and assistance for repairs, he said.Anek said FAD inspections had found that in most cases stupa tops had broken off or tilted but would not need major costly repairs. The most damage was found at Wat Dong Mada, in Chiang Rai's Mae Lao district - the quake's epicentre, where the head of the main 100-year-old Buddha broke off.The top of two stupas in Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai, also broke off.Chiang Rai Governor Pongsak Wangsamer said that an inspection of damage was conducted at Mae Suay dam - it had found cracks but they were not of concern. He said the dam could withstand a 7.0-magntude quake, and that evacuations were ready to be conducted if the dam broke. -- The Nation 2014-05-10
Popular Post BawBae Posted May 9, 2014 Popular Post Posted May 9, 2014 And they will work just as well as those bomb detectors, guaranteed. 4
Popular Post Thai at Heart Posted May 9, 2014 Popular Post Posted May 9, 2014 -- Devices capable of giving an early warning for earthquakes, fires and floods Wow. That is up there with the water pushers. 11
noitom Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 And he says that the office of Buddhism should give money for repair.
bino Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 (edited) And they will be maintained to the same standard as the Tsunami detection and warning equipment installed as a knee-jerk reaction to that disaster. Edited May 9, 2014 by bino 2
NongKhaiKid Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 So ancient temples etc are to be fitted with, I presume, smoke detectors and sprinkler systems, and seismology equipment. Will they be like the dummy CCTVs in Bkk ? i didn't mention flooding s we can all look out the window and watch the level rising.
Doc46 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 What good are all the warning systems going to do???? Nobody adheres the warnings (this is Thailand )and the warning systems aren't going to safe all the substandard buildings (100%) 2
Popular Post Tokay Posted May 10, 2014 Popular Post Posted May 10, 2014 The nonsense never ends. It's like April Fools Day every day of the year. That's part of why I love this place. It's like living in a cartoon. 6
JoeThePoster Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Devices capable of giving an early warning for earthquakes, fires and floods Why no lottery numbers? 1
ezzra Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Warning devices to be installed.... yeah right, until they will be stolen and sold for scrap metal or stop working after few months due to "lack of budget"
canuckamuck Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 (edited) The GT-200 (Mark II) also does earthquake flood and fire detection. only 1 million baht per unit. I have a bag full in the trunk of my car if they are interested. Dr. Porntip recommends this product Edited May 10, 2014 by canuckamuck
rhythmworx Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Just buy a big bag of marbles and plates and hand them out to the locals. If the marble moves evacuate. 1
Mrjlh Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 No such thing exists! Another scam believed by the authorities. 1
oneday Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 An absolute waste of money and an extreme over-reaction from people who probably will not experience another earthquake like that in their lifetime. My house is only a couple miles from the San Andreas fault in California where a massive quake is well overdue. If anybody would have early warning devices, if they really work and give enough time to do something about it, which is highly unlikely, it is Californians.
chainarong Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script> No such thing exists! Another scam believed by the authorities. Well these devises do exist , unfortunately they only alarm off when the event happens , to predict what mother nature is going to do is unpredictable , I have used detection gear underground and they detect where rock burst / ground movement happens , only when it happens , not before.
masuk Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 One thing I haven't read about, is the fate of all those water towers. Thousands of litres perched in a tank on top of a single concrete upright. As swimming pools at ground level slopped all over the place, what fate, if any, on those towers?
JesseFrank Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Hope they are dependent on batteries like the Tsunami beacon that ran out of battery several years ago already.
BillyBobThai Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 China has already signed a deal to supply Thailand with their best equipment.
realenglish1 Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 (edited) Early warning for an Earth Quake QUICK SENT THE PATENT IN Edited May 10, 2014 by realenglish1
cheshiremusicman Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 No such thing exists! Another scam believed by the authorities. You know it and I know it, but the long suffering Thai's will believe it because it comes from someone above them.
unanimosity Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 So ancient temples etc are to be fitted with, I presume, smoke detectors and sprinkler systems, and seismology equipment. Will they be like the dummy CCTVs in Bkk ? i didn't mention flooding s we can all look out the window and watch the level rising. This story is a twofold revenue stream for politicos that control the purse strings, e.g., "Give us money to set up alarms and warning systems," which are guaranteed not to work because the money spent to eradicate after-the-fact the effects of the disasters is the other side of the disaster revenue coin. Warnings cannot work in the case of earthquakes and in the case of floods it has been flooding in Thailand for thousands of years and nothing is done to relocate people or businesses from zones that have flooded for centuries because officials are making money cleaning up after the disasters. 1
unanimosity Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 (edited) is this really possible to warn before earthquake??!! Only if you put FIFA or Muay Thai officials in charge. Edited May 10, 2014 by unanimosity

The rest of the world should be told of this technology, it might have save Japan, from tsunamis, many countries from dangerous forest fires and even Thailand from yearly flooding. Amazing. 1

Um, sorry, but "Early Warning" means BEFORE it happens...not while it is happening. So, they do NOT exist.
Rob8891 Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 The Quake predictors are rolling off the production line as we type. No batteries needed, they run indefinitely one a bottle of Snake Oil. Only 5000 baht a bottle, or 65,000 baht for 10. 1
allan michaud Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Just hysterical on so many levels Does the Fine Arts Director do a stand up routine too? However "Chiang Rai Governor Pongsak Wangsamer said that an inspection of damage was conducted at Mae Suay dam - it had found cracks but they were not of concern." Just what is downstream of this dam?
espinoza Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 This is the next job for Buddha Issara, instead of going to jail for the rest of his liftime.
