Rangoon from Patong

Featured Replies

Not sure if I have chosen the best forum for this question - it could have been posted in the Phuket forum I guess.

I'm going to be in Patong for around 9 days next month (June) at the start of which I will be spending a few days in Ko Samui. On returning to Patong I am considering going to Rangoon (Yangon if you want to be pedantic) for a couple of days. Nothing serious just a visit to look around and eat. Flying is probably the best option. What are the sights to see and things to do and who should I fly with?

Best fly with an airplane.

Calling the city Yangon is correct, not pedantic. You also say St. Petersburg and not Stalingrad, and Istanbul and not Constantinople, right?

No I don't. The undemocratic ally elected military junta named it Yangon.

Yes, the government at the time renamed the city back to its old name. They had all the right to do so, please check international law.

Who named it Rangoon? Did they have any democratic right whatsoever? If you have no background in international law, Google might still help you. Ignorance does not. Why don't you call the city Dagon?

If you do not care about the history and the reality of the country, I suggest you don't visit it.

History, my friend. I didn't even check what Wikipedia writes about it.

Anyway, good luck for your travels.
