DIT to peg food prices at department stores, starting May 26th

BANGKOK, 16 May 2014 (NNT) - The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has instructed many retail stores and supermarkets to strictly control their food prices.

DIT Deputy Director-General Santichai Santhawanpaet announced that the department has spoken with six major retail chains including Tesco Lotus, The Mall, Big C, Central, Tang Hua Seng, and Tops.

Mr. Santichai has requested all these stores to peg the prices of ready-to-eat meals at 30 to 70 baht per dish, which would start in effect on May 26th. Food vendors are prohibited to raise the prices beyond these rates.

Apart from that, the DIT has also joined hands with Big C and Tesco Lotus to launch a “Blue Flag” food court campaign that would give discounts on ready-to-eat meals in order to make the food items more cost-friendly to consumers.

The campaign would begin from May 31st to June 29th at Big C stores while Tesco Lotus still hasn’t decided on the date yet.
