Both Worlds, Can I?

Featured Replies

Hello all, first I'm new here, just found the place really. I been thinking of going back to my home in Thailand but, all of my knowlege is mostly American base (luk krueng). Like the government, fileing taxes, stuff like that. My father is Thai, was in the US army and we travel around. I have duel citizitship to Thailand and USA, I have passports for both and the last time I was there I gotten my Thai Card. Now, I finishing up my degree in American before I go and stuff but I was woundering a few things.

1. Because I have my Thai Card, I can apply for jobs that other can't?

2. When it says Thai only in the ad listing I can still apply as I be "label" as a Thai citizen?

3. What problems are issues would I be coming across that I haven't thought of, if any body can think of anything?

I know these are crazy questions but I'm on a trip to understand all of these problems/issues so I know how to go forward on things. Thanks for reading!

You will enter Thailand on your Thai passport and you will be Thai, free to apply for any job, buy land, etc.

There may be employment issues if you do not read and write Thai perfectly. But, you have the advantage of speaking passable English.

Depending on your age, you might be subject to the military draft. That may be your biggest issue.

As said you have all the same rights as any Thai citizen. You can apply for any job you want to.

Unless you are over the age of 30 you do have to be concerned about the draft. It is something you will have to handle after you get here. You have probably already missed the draw at the age of 21 so there may be away around it.

I'm turning 33 this year, so don't have to worry about that part.

Then the answer to your Both Worlds question is Yes, You Can.

Many would envy you, except for the part about having to pay US taxes forever.

you can do everything a Thai citizen can do, because you are one..thumbsup.gif

you no restrictions on what job you apply for etc

I'm turning 33 this year, so don't have to worry about that part.

When you start looking for a job some employers may want a document stating that you are clear for the draft. You can get that at an Amphoe. You may have to prove you were not here at the time you would of been eligible for it.

That should be pretty easy to get. My area or field of education and work is Information Technology and Help Desk Support. I know the IT field is not so hot in Thailand but, ideas to what I can do with that, maybe? I working on finishing up my A.of Science in IT. But looking at maybe an B.S when i can. Maybe finishing it over there in Thailand, at an american college.

Yes to your question and no I haven't.

----------------------

Yes. but there is a tax treaty that would allow him to write of the Thai taxes he would paid against any U.S. tax liability he owed.

Because he has dual nationality, he is both a Thai and a U.S. citizen, so the tax treaty should apply to him.

"...the tax treaty should apply to him"

Certainly, but it was just a light-hearted remark. He'll have plenty of time to study his tax situation while he's job-hunting.

well I would not quite say people should envy, because even can stay here etc. etc. the pay is still a lot less than US and chances of becoming rich is much higher in US than here unless you have a good start and parents have lots of money over here

I'd be very happy indeed to have both U.S. and Thai citizenship but I'm not eligible for the latter because I'd already retired before I moved here.

I guess I'm lucky in this area.

I don't think anybody is trying to go to Thailand to be rich, well I wouldn’t think so. It's more of the environment and family aspect is why I’m looking at it.
