World War II bomb found at Bangkok MRT project site

If you get the airport link train from Phaya Thai, sit on the left side & look out the window. Those rail yards & sheds cover a huge area. Lots & lots of old rolling stock completely grown over with ivory.

You are referring to the Makkasan Railyards for some reason which is unclear to me, not the Bang Sue railyards where the bomb was found.

Yes, Makkasan is huge , nearly 2km long and will be completed redeveloped into a new inner city site in the next 10-20 years. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/679228-bangkok-makkasan-chong-nonsi-land-talks-begin/#entry7003039

(The Bang Sue Railyards are also being completely redeveloped) http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/653268-bangkoks-mo-chit-2-bus-terminal-to-be-relocated-ahead-of-aec/page-2

Your posts are well written and informative. With the redevelopment of the Bang Sue yards and shops, where will the marshaling of freight trains and servicing of SRT's large loco fleet take place under these new plans? Udon Thani?

As for HST, that's still fantasy land stuff at the moment, since the NCPO has determined double tracking the existing system is more viable for Thailand.

Udon would be too far. The loco fleet is being moved out to Kaeng Khoi Junction (125km from BKK) on the NE line where a new loco and maintenance center is being built. I think that it is due to open in late 2015 which means it will open sometime in late 2016....

20 new Chinese trains (CSR Quishuyan) are being leased and 50 more planned to be purchased. The first 2 of the 20 are due in Sept with the rest by mid 2015. Not sure about the quality though.........There is a grandiose typical over the top Thai produced video of the new trains on Youtube that one can view. Good for a laugh...

The situation is quite critical with something like 40%+ of locos being out of service due to a lack of spare parts and the age of the trains.

Was Bangkok 'bombed' during WWII ?

Not a piss take, I didn't know.

What was the history?

The allies bombed it at the start of ww2 because Thailand sympathised with the Axis, particularly Japan. Then things started to get a bit hot and the Japs started to lose, so Thailand kinda changed sides later in the war, and just about denied everything, as they do. It's called 'pragmatism' - subai subai.

Actually sounds like they acted in their interest of their own people and country and did it successfully staying out as much as possible of a war they wanted no part of.

Actually they were the only Asian country to side with the Japanese in declaring war on Britain & the US. All the rest were subjugated by the Japanese(many Koreans did however volunteer and were used militarily by their conquerors) . The aggression towards the West did the Thais very little as the Japanese never gave them any power or land and enslaved large numbers of them.

As I said, they acted in their own interest. The never lost control and power of their government or their military and they came out pretty much unscathed and unpunished after the war.
