Kenya's famous bull elephant Satao slain in Tsavo by poachers with poison arrows

TSAVO: -- ONE of Africa’s largest and best-known elephants has died after being shot by poachers using poisoned arrows.

Wildlife officials in Kenya at the weekend revealed the loss of the “old friend” known as Satao, who was famed for his giant tusks — the big-money target for his killers.

The bull animal, who was aged around 45, was slain in May in Kenya’s vast southeastern Tsavo national park.

He was thought to have been the continent’s biggest elephant — or certainly one of them — which would make him the largest wild land mammal in the world. His tusks were so large they could drag on the ground.

The Tsavo Trust, which works to protect the wilderness and its animals, announced the death “with great sadness” for one of the “most iconic and well-loved tuskers.”

Sick, sick people. I can't comprehend it. I don't mean to sound unfeeling because I'm not, but under the circumstances I hope he was able to pass on his genes over the years so that maybe there will be more like him.

Sadly even with some impact from a slowing of Chinese demand, elephants are still being killed at an unsustainable rate. In 2013 an estimated 20,000 + were poached.

Unless the demand for Ivory is addressed elephants will soon no longer exist in the wild.

No need to get all dramatic and fatalistic about the entire human race. Most humans are good and lead a positive life. Certain groups of people, including many Kenyans, are the exception, not the rule. These people are subhuman, lack any morals and place no value on any life be it animal or human. These peoe rape, torture and pillage innocent humans so no surprise they care nothing about animals. One couldd say they are victim of their own circumstances in countries such as Kenya, but they act as bad or demonstrate a complete lack of moral compas even when living in countries with better opportunities. No need to bash entire human race simply because certain groups have not and apparently will never evolve.

Humans use a tremendous amount of the Earth's resources and don't have a good record of sharing space with other creatures. It's not that humans are innately evil, it's just that we are basically selfish.

Homo sapiens cannot be the end product of evolution. There just has got to be a more intelligent species somewhere in the cosmos.

One crackpot theory I heard was that the earth is a intergalactic penal colony.

That would explain a lot.

Maybe not so crackpot after all.

Most humans are good? I come from the Thomas Hobbs school of philosophy...

Tell that one to Indian women...

This type of news just hurts my heart.

doug-giles-bear.jpg?w=430&h=291

There are too many idiots with rifles on this planet. They kill animals- and call it a ‘sport’- these creatures lived in peace on this planet for thousands of years, probably before mankind. I wish this guy- James Hetfield, guitarist of Metallica- would have stood unarmed in front of this bear. It reminds me on a song line of CSNY: “a man’s a man who looks a man right between the eyes”

But idiocy seems to be a world wide epidemic:

Yes, some groups are subhuman and never seem to evolve-- many Europeans, for example, and USAns, as well as many Chinese, and Russians. No country seems exempt from their predations, whether it be from outright military war, or economic war. Although of late, to be fair, the US and European nations have a leg up in this regard on the Russians, and definitely on the Chinese.

Their history of rape, torture, and pillage is well-documented, and continues today. They seem unable to rein in their base drives for power, money, sex and petroleum, and even though the planet is critically endangered by their ways, they cannot seem to stop themselves. It is no wonder their "great white hunters" came to Africa to slaughter dozens of thousands of elephants. One could say they are victim of their own circumstances in that the environment that spawned them continually reinforces memes of domination and materialism, but even when they become expatriates in other countries, they continue to demonstrate a complete lack of moral compass.

No need to bash the entire race, though. The above does not apply to all citizens of the larger nations (I have met some who have overcome their unfortunate backgrounds), and there are people, usually in smaller countries, who manage to maintain a dignity that is quite remarkable given the dominant operating paradigm of our world nowadays.

I think its time to focus--this is a topic about poachers and the absence of strong conservation efforts in Africa.

As far as your statement about the US, it was a leader in conservation efforts since the Teddy Roosevelt era and continues to have a strong environmental track record, including education, legislation and enforcement. The US does not allow the wholesale slaughter of any of its endangered species.

No but it allows its citizens to go to Africa and shoot canned lions and various other species, like that stupid b*tch who was such as big "hero" shooting a "caged " lion, if she such a good hunter throw her out in the bush on her own with prides of wild lions about with a bow and a water bottle, and let's see how good she is Edited by Soutpeel

Sure, there are idiots in the US, but what percentage of the US population goes on safaris in Africa to shoot big game? Funny how this one example clouds or biases your judgment about an entire country of basically good people.

Are you kidding? There are more than a few on this planet already.

Take the dolphins. What do humans do? Work like dogs, get stressed out, then die. The dolphins just play all day in the sea.

I rest my case.

I am not saying I disagree with your post but are there any countries that actually have laws against their citizens hunting big game in other countries? I am genuinely curious.
