PATTAYA: -- On Monday afternoon at Pattaya Police Station, the Region 2 Acting Police Commissioner, Police Major General Sanit, announced the arrest of two people, accused of abducting a woman from a Pattaya Bar after she failed to keep up repayments on a loan.

The General named the two suspects as Khun Tanaporn aged 42 and Khun Anuchar aged 28 who were arrested in Buri Rum Province. They are accused of abducting Khun Yupin from the Madame T Bar in Soi 13 off Pattaya Beach Road on 19th June. Khun Yupin had fled to Pattaya after she failed to fully repay a loan of 60,000 Baht plus interest of 1,200 Baht per day to the mother of Khun Tanaporn, who has yet to be arrested.

Khun Yupin had paid approximately 70,000 Baht but could not pay any more. The Mother of Khun Tanaporn called her on many occasions and threatened her with violence which forced her to flee to Pattaya.

The two suspects were sent to Pattaya to look for her and she was subsequently taken from the Bar.

This goes on too much, where they take advantage of the girls by charging very high interest. How can you expect a girl to pay 1,200THB a day interest ?

Like it or not, loan sharks are WHY there are so many red light district workers. Red light district workers are why Thailand is such a popular tourist destination. Let's not fool ourselves: Scum like these two are necessary...

The first few months I was in Thailand, I witness a struggle between 4 big guys and a young motorcycle delivery boy at KFC at Serie Center in BKK.

Many people were there and witness the struggle of the boy, but nobody went to help him.

I went into KFC to eat and asked the staff what was happening to the delivery boy and the answer was that he behind on the payments of his motorcycle.

The next day, I read at the frontpage of the newspaper that the boy was found dead in the bushes.
That was my first encounter with the beautiful "Land of Smiles".
A country where you are not even allowed to smile on any official picture.

Instead of paying the money, the victim’s daughter contacted Pattaya Police who liaised with their Buri Rum colleagues who raided the house of the abductors.

What's that saying again - you can take a girl out of the bar, but you can't make her pay you the money?

In Singapore, the law is very harsh with loan sharks and they can get 12 to 24 months in jail plus an extra three months if they are caught harassing anyone.

Not difficult forThailand to introduce similar laws if they wanted to.saai.gif

Good on Singapore.

Loan sharks used to blight the UK in the 60's and early 70's - especially in the inner city areas affected by recession and high unemployment. Scum exploiting parasites who rely on violence and fear to extract very high interest from often desperate people.

Is abduction the same as kidnapping? And what are penalties for that? Give them at least ten years in slammer. That would send a message to those parasites.

"Scum like these two are necessary..." gets my vote for least intelligent remark of the month, and does have stiff competition.

Jeez. Talk about arse over tip.

Why not remove scum like these from society. Then provide education and economic opportunities so there is an alternative to working in the sex trade. The Netherlands and Germany have legal sex trades, where the girls are safe and healthy and so are customers. And, they even collect tax thumbsup.gif

Thailand really has so much more, mega amounts more, to offer tourists than simply pandering to the sexpats. Not all of Thailand is like Pattaya, Soi Cowboy or Nana. And not all tourists and expats are sex tourists.

Your reply amiably demonstrates your high cultural appreciation and the type of tourist category you could be put in.

Have a look at some websites, books and try maybe opening you mind. (Use the head on your shoulders).

Maybe time for Thailand to look at the "Credit Union" model of borrowing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_union

Enforcement is quite a separate issue from making the law. Both issues should be redressed.
