BANGKOK: -- A huge fire broke out Friday morning at a large plastic pellet warehouse of Bisco factory at the Bangpoo Industrial Estate in Praekkasa sub-district of Samut Prakan province forcing immediate evacuation of hundreds of workers inside the estate after several explosions were heard.

It was not yet known how the fire was started but the factory stored a huge volume of plastic pellets which are inflammable.

More than 10 fire engines were rushed to fight the fire but firemen said there was sporadic explosions that kept them not to go nearer for safety reason.

Containers of chemical fluids were reportedly also kept in the warehouse and the sounds of explosions were heard at times during the blaze.

By noon two warehouses are gutted and the steel frame supporting the warehouse has collapsed.

As all doors of the warehouse were open, the fire quickly spread all over the building and its steel structure then caved in.

Casualties were still unknown.

Witnesses said the fire started about 8.30 a.m. at the one-storey, rectangular warehouse of Bangpoo Intermodal Systems Co (Bisco) located on 13B road within the compound of the industrial estate.

Fire destroys plastic pellet factory in Bang Pu Industrial Estate

SAMUT PRAKAN, 27 June 2014 (NNT) - A fire has erupted in a warehouse of the Bang Pu Inter Model Systems Co. Ltd (BISCO) this morning. No casualties have been reported so far, however.

BISCO is responsible for producing plastic pellets and one of its main warehouses is located inside the Bang Pu Bang Pu Industrial Estate block 13B, Samut Prakan province. The warehouse was a one-story building that kept several sacks containing polymers as well as chemical products, pesticides, and other kinds of toxins.

Thirty fire trucks were deployed to the scene to extinguish the flames. Investigations reveal that the fire may have been caused by spontaneous combustion, as a number of chemical containers were also kept inside the warehouse.

When the fire broke out, the building’s steel framework had collapsed and spread rapidly towards other areas. Multiple explosions were also heard from time to time.

Authorities are still trying to contain the fire at this point whereas forensic police officers will be brought in later to investigate the actual cause of the fire.

It sounds like this fire involved polypropylene chips which are used in the manufacture of plastics.

Back in 1995 at a B.A.S.F warehouse at the I.C.I Wilton Site near Redcar in

Cleveland U.K. there was a fire alarm actuating at 4am. Our station was the first to be mobilised and

I was in charge of one of the fire appliances.

On arrival it seemed to be contained to the single warehouse. Within minutes the fire was through the roof and it ended

up being that intense that the roof of buildings across the road, some 200 metres away caught fire through radiated heat.

It was described as being the biggest fire in Europe, in post war history.

There were 37 fire Appliances in attendance, and it took over 2 days to bring the incident under control.

The incident generated large quantities of smoke. But fortunately, in this case the smoke was deemed to be non-toxic,

On post fire investigation it was determined that the fire was caused by a faulty fluorescent light fitting in a polypropylene warehouse.

I think around 10,000 tonnes of chips burned......there were no casualties.

Just saying like.

Have a Nice Day.

I bet two bits that there were few fire code violations, inadequate fire detection, and prevention devices. Storage of highly flammable and potentially toxic materials is a serious matter and the municipality should be questioned as to the safety of this plant. Luckily thus far, no deaths or injuries.
