Round of 16 remaining World Cup matches at 11:00pm to be aired on Channel 11

BANGKOK, 1 July 2014 (NNT) - The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has affirmed that RS International Plc., the broadcast rights holder for the FIFA World Cup, must abide by the rules by televising all the matches on free TV channels.

NBTC Secretary-General Takorn Tantasith revealed that the Thai people are able to watch the last two Round of 16 matches scheduled to air at 11:00pm between France and Nigeria as well as Argentina vs Switzerland on Channel 11. All other matches beyond the Round of 16 would be televised on Channels 5 and 7, and also Thai PBS as a back-up channel.

RS has been criticized by the public earlier for not airing all the Round of 16 matches as well as a group match between the Netherlands and Chile on free TV after the NBTC decided to compensate them at least 427 million baht for their business opportunity loss. The media giant’s decision to not televise the matches between Brazil vs Chile and the Netherlands vs Mexico has sparked a controversy and a serious public backlash.

At this point, the NBTC is considering reducing the amount of the 427 million baht compensation to RS for breaching the agreement to make the World Cup available for all viewers nationwide.
