Dharamshala: The 21st birthday of Gyalwa Karmapa, head of Kagyu tradition of

Tibetan Buddhism, was held yesterday at the Gyuto Monastery here.

Devotees from Taiwan, Korea, Bhutan, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand and all

over the world have gathered to offer their wishes to Gyalwa Karmapa as he

turned 21 yesterday.

The ceremony began with long-life prayer offering to him.

The prayer ceremony was followed by Kalon Tripa Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche's

speech. Kalon Tripa wished and prayed for the long life of Gyalwa Karmapa on

behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and all the Tibetan

people.

Kalon Tripa and the Chairman of the Assembly of the Tibetan People's

Deputies (ATPD) Mr. Karma Choephel said that the Tibetan people are and will

be ever grateful to him for his service to the Tibetans in particular and

humanity in general and for protecting Kagyu lineage.

The chairman also briefed about the resolution passed during the 9th session

of the 12th ATPD in year 2000 to welcome Gyalwa Karmapa for his successful

escape and arrival in Dharamshala that year.

He said that the ATPD would continue its effort to write to the Indian

Government urging them to allow him to visit Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim.

In the afternoon there were cultural performances to entertain all the

guests and public.

Present were the chief justice commissioner and the two justice

commissioners of the Tibetan Supreme Justice Commission, chairperson and

standing committee members of the ATPD, Kalon Tripa Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche

and other three Kalons of the CTA, officials of the CTA and heads of the

non-governmental organisations.

Hundreds of local Tibetan people have also gathered to receive an audience

of Gyalwa Karmapa and to wish him.
