Are there civilized parts of Thailand where you don't get the "farang" treatment?

when people wai me I don't wai back but instead bow like a Japanese, responding in my own way.

And therein lies the fundamental contradiction that underlies your "problem." You want be a local without acting like a local at least so far as to demonstrate your empathy. smile.png It's nonsensical here. You've been given some good advice already above about what you need to do so that you can fit in comfortably. Quite a few farang forum members have tried the Thai way and found out that, lo and behold, it works! Generally speaking, most of the time.

I consider wherever my feet rest on this planet as home, however temporary.

But Thais don't share your viewpoint and they can't understand it. We're hearing a lot of self-centered and self-important emphasis on "difference" from you. Yet you want to be treated "same." rolleyes.gif

In general you have an unrealistic expectation. Thais ain't gonna change for you to accommodate your "different worldview" for your greater convenience. Nor do they owe you that or anything else, really. Doesn't matter who else in whatever other place is doing what.

So, you change, move elsewhere, or just continue with your complaining, which is beginning to look pretty silly. Up 2 u.

Seems to be like a thread to become negative about Thai people.

To answer your question......alone in your hotelroom. You should be fine there.

Yeah, but he still has to live in his head, and that might be difficult.

Judging by his responses and attitude, it's no wonder he doesn't fit in.

P.S stay out of the tourist rip off zones

OP, you've got it backwards. You don't "blend in" by everyone else acting a certain way. You blend in by *yourself* acting a certain way.

To a degree that holds but as I pointed out I have directly experienced in China 2 cities, a mere 100 km a part, one of which I was just a white face in a sea of Chinese people, treated nearly exactly the same, and the other one where I was just another "foreigner". OP asked if it is possible to find this in Thailand and I have received 5 city names in response. Mods feel free to close any time.
